thanks for sharing Lor. my ancestors (father's side) came from Miag-ao. that is what my last name came from, kay sa Miag-ao daw puro letter M ang mga family names sa mga tawo.

This is the place i want to visit when i go home.

No problem, Belle.

There are many beautiful places of Iloilo and I personally have only begun to be exposed to it. I know to Illongos who go to medical school with me. One is a beautiful woman who has my attention, and one who is my kumpare and batchmate.

The women of Iloilo are mestiza guapa. Guapa jamo...

Bolingitboy, what is also wonderful to see is that the church resembles the styles of churches that are in Mexico City built in the same time epoch; as well as the old style churches that are still in Sevilla, Burgos, Barcelona, and Madrid, Espana~.

Imperial Architecture.
European Architecture in the heart of Ancient Philippines.

lor, i think the similarity of architectural styles of some churches in the philippines, spain and mexico that were built around the same period can be attributed to the fact that the architects of early philippine churches were spaniards... it was not until the arrival of legazpi that the colonization of the philippines truly began (the two previous spanish expeditions that anchored on philippine soil namely magellan's expedition and the one led by ruy lopez de villalobos did not stay long enough to do anything much toward colonizing the natives) and all his men, while not exclusively spaniards, started out from mexico. in fact, legazpi was already a longtime spanish emigrant to mexico when he was asked by the spanish king to lead an expedition to the philippine islands. thus, the structures made heavily influenced spanish architecture that reflected the artistic style of that period. i guess the spanish influence in all three places is the uniting factor that link all three together on a common ground.

Bolingitboy, thank you for that excellent historical lesson. Yes, you are right, the Spanish influence is, indeed, the uniting factor that link all three together. The cement.

I have a colleague who is a 3rd year medical student, his surname is 'Zamudio' and is a Spaniard, born and grew up in the city of Oviedo, Northern Spain. We always talk about history in our given free time, and we answer each other's question, and one conversation topic piece was his question concerning where I was from. I told him about Bohol, and Cebu as well as the concept of the Visayas etc. He was interested about the Philippines, and I showed him some pictures of the churches in Bohol: St. Joseph's Cathedral, the church in Valencia, the church in Garcia Hernandez etc, as well as the churches in Cebu etc. He commented how amazing it was to see that the old spanish churches have survived almost 200-300 years. The churches built in Cebu are identitical looking to the old churches in Northern Spain.

Now I wonder if the Spanish conquistadores, merchants and priests that came to settle and colonize central visayas, particularly Cebu were from Northern Spain or not. Considering the architectural similarities.

That and the fact that Cebu is also probably the most heavily Spanish influenced province in the entire Republic.
"The Queen City of the South"/ the First Spanish Colony in the Philippines, as it is known, afterall.

Its amazing tho, that in the lush green jungles of an Asian archipelago, the main structures that unites municipalities and regions are the churches.

Truly, the Philippines is the only Europeanized Nation in all of Asia.
We are truly a mixture of European (Spanish) and ethnic Malay and a sprinkle of Chinese.

I love it. Truly Unique.
That is why Filipinos adapt to any foreign environment, particularly in western environments.
Because, we have an innately Europeanized culture, and mentality.

I totally agree! I am so proud of how i was raised kay we are raised in "Euromeanized" culture which is refined I mean with a good manner. One thing wa nako ma adapt ang akong pagka kusog mo katawa kay it is very inappropriate, which i dont care. Otherwise compared to some Americans I am more cultured than them.

Pero sad to say nga ang atong bag-ong tubo karon are more westernized than Europeanized.

quote from lorenzo: "Now I wonder if the Spanish conquistadores, merchants and priests that came to settle and colonize central visayas, particularly Cebu were from Northern Spain or not. Considering the architectural similarities."

lor, the similarities in spanish architectural styles on old structures like churches particularly in cebu and churches in northern spain where your colleague from school comes from may have something to do with the fact that miguel lopez de legazpi, who started the actual colonization in the philippines that saw the erection churches in the places that they stayed in and established their presence, was born in the town of zumaragga in the basque province of guipozcoa in northern spain. the biggest city in that region is bilbao and some buildings there might appear to be similar with churches in the visayas.

"That and the fact that Cebu is also probably the most heavily Spanish influenced province in the entire Republic.
"The Queen City of the South"/ the First Spanish Colony in the Philippines, as it is known, afterall."

if cebu city is the most heavily spanish influenced in the whole country, it is because this is where legazpi established the first spanish settlement upon arrival on philippine soil. the first structure that they built was a walled encampment that served as barracks which exists to this day as fort san pedro. it is now a tourist destination which is walking distance from the sto, nino cathedral. you may want to visit there when you get the chance. it houses on its upper level the cebu branch of the national museum which displays ancient treasures and relics taken from the wreckage of an old spanish galleon that was discovered off fortune island in batangas.  additionally, cebu city also hosts the oldest street in the philippines which is colon street.
