The Tarlac Provincial Police Office (TPPO) based in Camp Macabulos, Tarlac City, Tarlac transformed a 600 square meter idle lot into a verdant vegetable garden after receiving a “Gulayan sa Kanayunan†program briefing by the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR).
As the country reeled through the grave effects of the recent super typhoons that stormed most of the Luzon islands, DAR conceived the “Gulayan sa Kanayunan.â€
This was in reaction to vegetables hitting record high prices beyond the reach of simple households.
The program was successful in drawing attention of those who saw their benefits. The PNP asked DAR for the program briefing.
“Thanks to the DAR for this program since it did not only teach us to raise vegetables but also showed us possibilities in augmenting our income,†Sr. Supt. Col. Elsa F. Miranda of TPPO said.
Meanwhile, a total of 24.7 hectares of unoccupied lot in Tarlac City has metamorphosed into a fruitful vegetable heaven which produced string beans, bitter gourd, squash, eggplant, okra and the like.
Eventually, the over supply of the produce went on to be sold at the local market for better income generation of the farmers who participated in the program.
About 3,000 farmer beneficiaries in Tarlac were also trained to develop their farming skills as well as in leadership.
Lectures on basic organic fertilizer production to reduce farm input cost, in bred rice and sweet potato wine production were provided to enhance their farm outputs. Rural women were trained in basic cosmetology.- pna
