First Gentleman Mike Arroyo unveiled Wednesday during opening of the National Bamboo Development Forum a prototype 'Bahay Pinoy' core house made of bamboo, the grass Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) is promoting as material for construction, watershed planting and other uses.
The unveiling highlighted gains from bamboo research Mr. Arroyo supported since 2005.
"This prototype can withstand typhoons, tsunamis and other natural disasters," LLDA General Manager Edgardo Manda informed Mr. Arroyo as they and Department of Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Lito Atienza inspected the house.
Mr. Arroyo and Atienza also formally opened at
Philippine Trade Training Center, site of the forum, an exhibit showcasing the house and various bamboo products.
The prototype's total area is 30 square meters, including a 10-square meter loft for sleeping, and features a 1.6 square meter balcony at the front.
All columns, beams and rafters of this house are made of reinforced pre-cast concrete finished with bamboo.
Its roof is bamboo while walls are pre-cast concrete panels reinforced with wire mesh and finished with the same grass also.
"The strongest housing structures are made of bamboo," Atienza said at the forum's opening. "This specie has aerodynamic qualities that make it able to withstand storms and strong wind. We can tap bamboo in developing true Filipino houses as this grass abounds nationwide." - PNA
