510 years naging makapangyarihan ang teritoryong tinatawag bilang Sultanate of Sulu, hindi ito nasakop ng mga Kastila.

Nilinlang ng mga Amerikano ang Sultan ng Sulu matapos mapapirma sa isang kasunduan sa pangakong hindi sila guguluhin ng mga Amerikano, ang totoo'y ginawa lamang ito para 'di makisali ang malaking pwersa ng Sultanate laban sa mga kano, pero sa huli sinakop at nilusob pa rin sila.

Nasakop ng Amerikano ang teritoryo noong 1915. Ang pamilya ng Sultan na si Jamalul Kiram II ay ang isa sa pinakamayaman pamilya sa Asya noon, namatay si Kiram noong 1936.
