LOCALIZED HOLIDAYS SUGGESTED WHEN PHL HOSTS SEA GAMES

Press Release:: House Committee on Games & Amusements Member Rep. Jocelyn Tulfo has recommended the declaration of non-working holidays on select provinces and cities in Luzon, and  prayed for good weather while the country hosts the Southeast Asian Games.

"Fortunately November 30, the opening day is a Saturday and a regular non-working holiday because it is Bonifacio Day. The opening venue is the Philippine Arena which is easy to go to because it is just north of Quezon City, Caloocan, Valenzuela, Navotas, and Manila," Tulfo noted.

"But I respectfully ask the Executive Department that December 1 to 11 be declared non-working holidays all over provinces and cities which will host games," Tulfo said.

The MMDA, DILG, and PNP already recommended the declaration of holidays during SEA Games citing security and traffic-related concerns.

SEA Games venues will be in Clark in Pampanga, Subic in Zambales, Metro-Manila, and other areas like Biñan City (women's football), San Juan in La Union (surfing), Calatagan in Batangas (polo), Santa Rosa City (netball), Tagaytay (skateboarding, cycling) & Imus (underwater hockey) in Cavite, and Los Baños in Laguna (floorball, indoor hockey).

The Thailand team had to cancel scheduled practice at UP Diliman football field due to traffic.

"This way, we give the Filipinos who are closest to the SEA Games venues the opportunity to personally witness and experience sports history during our country's hosting. We also want all the delegations to feel the full warmth and energy of Filipino hospitality when they see all the arenas filled to capacity," she added.

Tulfo also said the Commission on Higher Education can "enjoin" the Luzon-based state universities and colleges, and private higher education institutions to support the SEA Games hosting by sending delegations to watch all the athletes compete.

"The Sangguniang Kabataan all over Luzon can also go to the SEA Games in full force under the leadership of the Department of the Interior and Local Government and the National Youth Commission," the ACT-CIS Party-list lawmaker said.

"The uncontrollable factor is the weather, so I urge the entire country to pray for good weather while we host the SEA Games. I also hope the ‘Manny Pacquiao effect’ will also happen so that we will have much less traffic and incidence of crime during the games," Tulfo said. (END).
