Ombudsman celebrates 24th anniversary

          The Office of the Ombudsman kicks-off the weeklong celebration of its 24th anniversary by setting up an Ombudsman’s Desk at key cities in Metro Manila.

       The soft launch of the activity, dubbed “Operation: Ombudsman Public Assistance” will be held from May 7 and 8, 2012 (8:30 am – 4:30 pm) at the main building lobby of the Quezon City Hall. It is open to the general public who wishes to avail of free legal assistance, seek aid in filing their claims from the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO), Social Security System (SSS) and Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) or report their grievances against certain public officials and employees.

          Similar activities shall be held in other cities on different dates: May 14 and 15 at the Kaloocan City Hall; May 17 and 18 - Manila City Hall; May 21 and 22 - Pasay City Hall; May 24 and 25 - Makati City Hall; May 28 and 29 - Mandaluyong City Hall and May 30 and 31 - Pasig City Hall.

          A two-day OMB Payroll Verification Exercise shall also be pilot-tested on May 7 and 8 in the OMB-Central, Luzon, Military and Other Law Enforcement Offices (MOLEO) and the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), aimed at weeding out ghost employees.

          The said activity is expected to be replicated in other Local Government Units (LGUs) in the National Capital Region (NCR).

          The "Ombuds-run: Indignation Rally Against Corruption" shall also be held on May 9, 2012. During the first part of this activity, participants of the OMB fun run shall race through the entire block starting from the flagpole inside the OMB office, then circle through Agham Road, right turn to North Avenue, then to Quezon Avenue and finally back to the finish line at the flagpole. The fun run starts at 5:45 am.

           The main part starts at around 6:15 am, when officials and employees of the Office of the Ombudsman, led by Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales, hold the indignation rally by marching from the OMB office, passing through Agham Road and North Avenue until they reach the QC Memorial Circle where a program shall be held.

          During the program, Ombudsman Morales will give a brief message and encourage the public to join in the Ombudsman’s efforts against corruption. The OMB’s institutional slogan, “Manindigan Kontra Katiwalian” shall also be launched during the program, as well as the reformatted Ombudsman weekly radio program, “Ombudsman Ngayon”, which airs every Wednesday, 10-11 am over DZRB-Radyo ng Bayan.

          The Office’ anniversary program on May 11 shall be the highlight of the week-long celebration. This also marks the start of the countdown to the Ombudsman Silver Anniversary in 2013.

          The Office of the Ombudsman became operational on May 12, 1988 upon the appointment of the first Ombudsman, the late Ombudsman Conrado Vasquez.
          The late President Corazon C. Aquino created the Office of the Ombudsman through Executive Order No. 243, restating its composition, powers and functions. Its powers were further strengthened with Congress’ enactment of RA 6770 (Ombudsman Act of 1989).
