An Abu Sayyaf terrorist long wanted by the law for a string of kidnapping cases, including the celebrated kidnapping of Italian missionary Fr. Giancarlo Bossi in 2007, died in an encounter with arresting police officers in Zamboanga City at noon today.
SAMAD AWANG alias Ahmad Jamal y Mara, succumbed to gunshot wounds after he engaged members of a composite police team in an encounter at 12:30 PM on December 9, 2020 in Sitio Sohaya, Brgy Mampang, Zamboanga City.
PNP Chief, Police General Debold M Sinas quickly commended the units and personnel involved in the operation for the significant accomplishment in the continuing campaign against crime and lawlessness in Western Mindanao.
“This operation serves as an example of a well-coordinated law enforcement action to account for wanted criminals,” he said.
In a report to the Chief PNP, Police Brig Gen Jonel Estomo, Director of the PNP Anti-Kidnapping Group (AKG) said a team led by AKG agents from the Mindanao Field Unit under PLTC Clarence Gomeyac, backed by operatives from the CIDG, PNP-SAF, Regional Mobile Force Battalion-9, Philippine Army Inteligence Unit, and Marine Battalion Landing Team -11, served a Warrant of Arrest against Awang for the crime of Kidnapping and serious Illegal Detention in Criminal case No. IM-13-0675 issued by Hon. Josefino Bael, Presiding Judge of RTC Branch 31 of Imelda, Zamboanga Sibugay.
Armed with a cal.45 handgun, Awang put up stiff resistance by firing at the arresting team triggering an encounter that led to his death, Estomo said.
"The long arm of the law finally caught up with this notorious and wanted criminal", Sinas said.
Awang is listed in PNP record as the 25th Most Wanted Kidnapping for Ransom suspect in Western Mindanao as sub-leader of the Abdussalam Group that is associated with the Abu Sayyaf faction of Furuji Indama.
Estomo said Awang was involved in the kidnapping of Joel Endino last Jan 29, 2011 at Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay; the kidnapping of Fr. Giancarlo Bossi in 2007 and the kidnapping of Kathy Casipong in 2013.
The Visayan-speaking Italian priest who had lived in the Philippine for over 20 years was kidnapped by Abu sayyaf terrorists in Payao, Zamboanga Sibugay and held captive in Basilan island for over a month and was released by his kidnappers due to pressure for military-police operations. Bossi was recalled to Italy by his religious order where he died of cancer in 2012.
