BDJ: Bargaining plea helps
reduce inmate congestion

Bargaining pleas which appeared to be taken advantage of by the illegal drug accused in court litigation have indeed reduced the number of inmates thereby easing out congestion in Bohol District Jail.

BDJ warden chief Inspector Renan Torreon of the Bureau of Penology and Jail Management bared this in an exclusive interview with BNT last week.

He said that the number of inmates inside BDJ is now over 600 from used to be almost a thousand before the implementation of plea bargaining

Meanwhile, Torreon defended his budget for 2020 during budget hearing conducted by appropriations committee chaired by Vice-governor and now acting governor Rene Relampagos.

Former Talibon mayor and now Board Member Restituto Auxtero, committee's vice-chair, took over in presiding the budget hearing last week following Relampagos’s assumption as acting governor in lieu of Gov. Art Yap who started Nov. 20 his 90-day preventive suspension.

BDJ’s outlay for next year is reduced to just over P36 million from P38 million this year, Torreon said as he showed to BNT a copy of its budget.

As to the meals, each inmate is entitled to P100/day, he said.

This is being contributed by BJMP (P70.00) and province counterpart of P30.00.

The former Bohol Detention and Rehab Center has 100 personnel manning the prison facility.

There are 29 workers provided by BJMP and 37 and 34 plantilla and casual workers, respectively, by the provincial government.

BDRC management and operations were transferred to BJMP thru a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) executed by the provincial government during the time of then Governor Erico AUmentado and BJMP. (rvo)
