40 CHILDREN, TEENS TEST POSITIVE FOR HIV FROM SEX
Last January, 40 of the new 1,021 HIV-positive Filipinos were children and teenagers 10 to 19 years of age, the latest Department of Health HIV-AIDS Registry data show. There were also two children younger than 10 who get infected from mother-to-child transmission.
These 40 kids, they all got HIV through sexual contact.
"All were infected through sexual contact (2 male-female sex, 25 male-male sex, 13 had sex with both males & females), the DOH said.
As a registered nurse, I am deeply troubled by these figures because even the post-millennials are getting HIV and getting it through sexual intercourse.
These statistics and the individual case files are clear evidence requiring the full implementation of the Reproductive Health Law at the barangay level and with the involvement of schools and parent-teacher associations.
The DOH has also seen regional patterns. NCR is where 45 percent of all the HIV cases involving men having sex with men, while Central Visayas has the injecting drug use mode of transmission because almost all the 17 sharing of needles cases last January are in Region 7.
In Central Luzon, the HIV problem is mostly paid sex with females because 36 percent of the transactional sex cases are from there.
Sixty-eight OFWs tested positive for HIV also last January. (END)
