Vermi-Growers in Panglao Island

press release

Through representatives, first district Representative Edgar Chatto sent a message of support to Panglao Island Vermi-Growers Association (PIVGA) on their recent launching on September 7 at San Isidro Barangay Hall, Dauis.

LIFE Philippines Foundation Incorporated-Bohol Chapter launched PIVGA as part of their Solid Waste Management Program for Barangays Dao, San Isidro and Biking in the municipality of Dauis.

Mr. Daniel Moore, chief of the Office of Energy and Environment of USAID graced the event, together with LIFE Foundation BOT Chair Msgr. Cirilo Darunday and LIFE-Board of Directors.

Even amid hectic schedule at the marathon budget hearings in Congress, Chatto sent his chief of Staff, former board member Isabelito Tongco, to express gratitude to LIFE-Philippines Foundation, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Philippine Environmental Governance (ECOGOV) for uplifting the lives of the residents in the areas.

This time, the residents have a livelihood to attend to and source of finances for their daily needs and family.

He said they learned the value of proper solid waste management and, more importantly, realize that there is wealth from waste.

He further stressed that gone are the days when worms or "wati" in the dialect are considered gruesome as they can now be a source of livelihood.

The solon assured the group of his unwavering support to all their projects and programs.

In July last year, LIFE-Philippines Foundation started implementing the project on Proper Waste Composting to promote the usefulness of composting to agricultural activities from backyard garden to medium-scale and large-scale production.

Exactly a year after, vermi-composting was introduced to the community of the said barangays.

This rapid composting enhances the community because the product- -vermin or vermin cast will be used as fertilizer and there are already existing demands of it for organic farming.

At the same time, the vermin are now in demand in the market and it is not difficult to cultivate the worms since they reproduce faster and their food are already found in common household backyard composting.
