Panglao Water Problem Remains Unresolved
« on: October 29, 2008, 03:23:49 PM »
Gov. Erico Aumentado is not losing hope that in the end he will be able to broker a lasting solution to Panglao’s lingering water problem.

Exuding with optimism as ever, the governor will preside over for the nth time, another meeting with warring Panglao officials to lick the problem once and for all.

The euphoria of finding the right solution to the water problem proved short lived after a public consultation was held about a month ago to discuss the issue.

The meeting which was brokered by Gov. Aumentado and Cong. Edgar Chatto was seen as the final solution to the problem only to discover later that the warring Panglao officials were at each other throats again  throwing the so-called win-win- solution to the garbage heap of history.

Today’s meeting is seen as the governor’s last hurrah after he enlisted “handlers” of bickering officials to attend the meeting with the Bohol Beach Club as venue.

It may be recalled that Mayor Benedicto Alcala and majority of the members of the Sangguniang Bayan led by its presiding officer V-Mayor Pedro Fuertes have a falling out resulting in the water issue becoming a political football.

With his patience nearing breaking point, Mayor Alcala was slighted when he called a meeting Tuesday only to find out that he has only three councilors for an audience. The meeting was supposed to treat an important matter as the water system’s feasibility study but no way that it proceeded with dispatch because majority of the SB members including V-MAyor  Fuertes were nowhere to be found. The absentee officials have offered different excuses prompting the mayor to adjourn the meeting with a broken heart.

The designated handlers were required to convince their respective protegees in the SB to attend today’s meeting for the sake of the people of Panglao.

Mayor Alcala is bullish about solving Panglao’s water crisis after he was informed that at least three “big boys in the tourism business” are interested to construct resorts in Panglao.

He mentioned such big ticket developers like Bellevue Hotel and Regency Boracay.

According to some observers, the bone of contention in Panglao’s water shortage was centered on reports that some local officials were playing favorites on  interested  water providers. To each his own water supplier is all there is  in the scramble to provide the lucrative water supply contract.

This early tourism stakeholders like Gov. Aumentado, Cong. Chatto, Mayor Alcala and resort developer Anos Fonacier are anticipating that Panglao need an abundant water supply especially with the projected construction of the Panglao international airport. - Sunday Post
