Former Panglao mayor dies, interment today
At 1:20 am on Sunday, August 10, 2008, Derclo Reparato Bongoyan Araoarao, 68 years old, former municipal mayor of Panglao from 1980 to 1986, died at the family residence along Graham Avenue, this City, due to cardio-respiratory arrest secondary to multiple organ failure.
Born on October 8, 1939 as the eldest child of Demetrio Arancon Araoarao and Clotilde Dominguez Bongoyan, he was known as “Rep†to family and friends and “Derclo†to his high school and college classmates at Holy Name College (now Holy Name University). Having finished Bachelor of Science in Commerce – Major in Accounting, “Rep†was led by his Uncle George Araoarao to his stint with the Department of Public Works in Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur, then had his apprenticeship at the accounting firm of Jesus Sarmiento in Cebu City, until an opportunity opened for him as in-charge of the foreign accounts department of the Philippine Banking Corporation (owned by the Laurels) in Manila. Later, he was transferred to Philbanking – Magallanes Branch in Cebu City. He was already slated for a managerial position at the Philbanking – Mandaue Branch, but was convinced to enter in the political arena by his Uncle Arcadio A. Araw-araw, a radio commentator based in Cebu City and by his father, Demetrio, the highly-respected educator-turned-municipal councilor who was the concurrent Sangguniang Panlalawigan member representing Panglao at the time of Gov. Rolando G. Butalid.
He was elected municipal mayor of Panglao and served from June 1980 to 1986 succeeding Dr. Teofilo “Dodong†Arcay, Jr., during the administration of President Ferdinand Edralin Marcos. He is well-remembered for the improvement of the Panglao waterworks system, particularly the installation of the waterworks systems of Doljo and Danao, among other projects.
The “pangadye†will start at 8:00 am today at the Araoarao residence, after which his remains will be taken to the Saint Augustine Church in Panglao via the Causeway-Totolan Road at 10:00 am. A public viewing has been scheduled for Panglao constituents from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon. At 12:30 pm, the body will be brought to the Our Lady of the Barangay Parish Shrine, Cogon District for the requiem mass at 2:00 pm to be officiated by Rev. Fr. James Darunday.
Vice-Mayor Pedro Fuertes will deliver a speech on behalf of the Municipality of Panglao, to be followed by the messages of Rep’s brother Epelito B. Arao-arao, grandson Jalen Matthew A. Young, daughters US Army SSG Ann Claire A. Young and Fiel Angeli E. Araoarao-Gabin and wife Wincesa B. Espejo Araoarao. A song will be rendered by the Holy Name University Class 1955-1956 led by Oscar Adarne and Arlinda Uy. Interment will be at Victoria Memorial Park, Taloto District.
He is survived by his wife Wincesa “Wincie†Balatero Espejo Araoarao, long-time Physical Education teacher and Bukang Liwayway Dance Troupe founder, choreographer and adviser of Bohol National High School (now Dr. Cecilio Putong National High School); children City Information Officer Fiel Angeli A. Gabin (Eng’r. Jerome John Jumawan Gabin) of Tagbilaran City; artist-nurse Reparato Anthony E. Araoarao (Gracelyn Shiela Gallego Tubal) of Pearland, Texas; US Army Staff Sergeant Ann Claire A. Young (SFC Jabron Montez Young) of Fort Belvoir, Virginia and artist-website designer Coeli Marie A. Ruiz (Alex Ruiz) of Zephyrhills, Florida; grandchildren AJ Wincielou Johanna, Reese Lauren, Jalen Matthew, Jayla Marie, Jordan Michael and Seth Vincent; and siblings Genadita A. Clarabal and Epelito B. Araoarao. (crjjjs)
