Negative lang ko niya on two issues: 1) when he said he was Cebuano when interviwed on TV by the late Joe Quirino (Seeing Stars with Joe Quirino). I swear, I saw that episode with us neighbors trooping to the only house in our neighborhood that had a TV set at that time (early '70s), because it was announced that Yoyoy would appear on TV that night. Namalikas jud ang ubang mga tiguwang pagpanguli and 2) he inspired the filming of or allegedly wrote the script for "Bol-anon Ko Nyor", retitled into "El Byahedor" after a Boholano lawyer filed a compalint against the producers and won. The movie (I never saw it) allegedly made fun of Boholanos. Kon akoy pangutan-on, gusto ko motan-aw ana nga movie aron ma confirm nato kon unsay tan-aw nila ni Yoyoy (and those non-Boholanos who were involved in the film's production) natong mga Bol-anon sa una. Gi-perform ni nila during one of their European tours, ug pwerting lingawa sa audience! There is also one song of his nga wa poy message, although naay gamay nga Binisaya. Nakalimot na ko sa title ani, but I remember this was used during our Grade IV entrance march for a mass dance (field demonstration). Here are a few lines:

Buchiki was a song he admittedly composed, as he was inspired while riding on a DMTC bus from Marikina to Chinatown.
While whiling time away glancing at the steam coming off the hood of the yellow bus and the steam from the asphalt roads leading to ChinaTown, reading the names of the business establishments got his fancy. It was the only creative thing he could indulge in.
So you would cease to wonder how the hell he got those lyrics, he got it that way. I tried going the same way, via the DMTC and some of the lyrics er, the stores and shops in the song are still there. Not in the proper order though.

Personally, i think an artists greatest recognition is the fact that "people" see his works as one which evokes and stirs one's inner emotions.

In other works, Yoyoy's novelty songs live lives of their own and has become almost like the Boholano pambansang kantagayan. This is a recognition no government body can ever argue.

Hinuon, mas maayo if hed be given a post humous award from creditable organizations.

i agree that the fact many people and artists today recognize Yoyoy's legacy by emulating his creativeness in novelty singing, is itself an enormous show of respect to him.
But still, the greatness of this man and his talent hasn't been put atop the pedestal of being among Bohol's Greats. Same is true with Dagohoy. Our literature about Yoyoy is poor. Did we hear any book being published in honor of this man? I haven't heard one. (Correct me if i'm wrong.) People love his music, but i am not sure if people love the man behind the music. unless the next generation will know, at least, the substance beyond Yoyoy's shadow and his rising and falling, his music will surely be around, but Yoyoy, the person, may not.
