Bohol Chronicle

Last Sunday I wrote about the petition done by the Chinese in Tagbilaran, Bohol.  In this issue I will deal with the petition done by the Boholanos.

The petition for the retention of Bohol’s Politic-Military Governor Adolfo Martin de Baños was dated May 7, 1880.

The petitioners came from the towns of Tagbilaran, Dauis, Baclayon, Paminuita (now: Cortes), and Getafe.  I will write the names of the petitioner as best I can in deciphering the signatures.  I hope the reader can find the name of ancestor.

The same reasons were made by the Boholanos and the Chinese.  However, the Boholanos gave more emphasis on the following: 1. Request to let Gov. Baños stay for a time similar to his predecessors.  He was yet one-half years in service compared to previous governors with 6 to 8 years.  2. He was managing well the quintos or military draft.  3.  He was constructing new school houses and houses for the school teachers.

Petitioners from Tagbilaran
The signatories from Tagbilaran were led by; 1. Gobernadorcillo (now: Mayor) Dionisio Largo.  2. Felipe Rocha.  3. Enrico Palacio.  4. Geronimo Olivaris.  5. Anataleo Barcinas.  6.  Tomas Doroy.  7. Fideleno Lumain.  8. Mateo Rocha.  9. Felipe Paunat.  10. Roperto Tugunon.  11.  Patricio Pusta.  12. Eugenio Tundag.  13.  Juan Diez.  14. Nicolas Bugas.  15. Manuel Caraan.  16. Matias Manlopig.  17. Antonio Zamora.  18. Faustino Sagui.  19. Tumas Jumamel.  20.  Feliciano Sale.  21. Fabiano Sale.  22. Estevan Butalid.  23. Jose Ramirez.  24. Timoteo Bomaat.  25. Francisco Maslog.  26. Flaviano Ramirez.  27. Pablo Lumutjang.  28.  Eduardo Dinsay (Quinsay?).  29. Leoncio Torralba.  30.  Juan Torralba.  31. Tomas Jalap.  32. Lucino Mend…(illegible)  33. Marcos Galab.  34. Marcos Fernia.  35. Eduardo Calceta.

It seems that the petition was spearheaded by Eduardo Calceta.  He signed at the lower-right portion of the paper and also wrote, Maestro de Escuela procedente de la Normal = School teacher coming from the Normal (The normal school in Manila managed by the Jesuits).

Felipe Rocha was the father of former Bohol Governor Fernando Rocha who was still 15 years old during that time. Mateo Rocha was the grandfather of Ex-City Mayor Jose Ma. Rocha. Estevan Butalid was the progenitor of the Butalid clan.  Flaviano Ramirez was the Directorcillo or Municipal Secretary of Tagbilaran.  Juan Torralba later on became a Governor of Bohol and Senator of the Philippines.

Maybe the petition did not reach on time to the Governor General in Manila.  The list of Provincial Governors of Bohol has the term of Gov. Baños as July 19, 1878 to 1880.  His previous assignment was Director of the San Ramon Agricultural Colony.  Therefore the petition had no effect on the reassignment of Gov. Baños to another place.  However, Governor Baños was reassigned to Bohol from Dec. 11, 1889 to 1892.

Romans 10:9-10
"If you declare with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved."
