There is hope that pending cases filed in the courts of law here will be resolved expeditiously as new first and second-level courts will be created in the province.
In an interview with the Chronicle, Senator Francis "Chiz" Escudero yesterday announced that the Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights has approved the creation of new first and second-level courts in the province out of the 636 proposed for the whole country.
The number of additional courts will still be determined by the Senate justice panel, according to Escudero, who is chairman of the upper chamber's committee on justice.
"Our country's justice system has somewhat been debilitated by a shortage of courts of law. Our dockets are always clogged and justice moves at a glacial pace. Creating more courts will definitely increase the rate of resolving pending cases," Escudero said.
First level courts are comprised of Municipal Trial Courts in Cities (MTCCs), Municipal Trial Courts (MTCs) and Metropolitan Trial Courts (MeTCs), while second-level courts refer to Regional Trial Courts (RTCs).
In Region VII there will be a total of 88 new tribunals which will be distributed across the provinces of Bohol, Cebu, Negros Oriental and Siquijor.
On a nationwide basis, the proposed increase of 636 new courts in the country constitutes almost 30 percent of existing first and second-level tribunals. Presently, there are 2,174 first and second-level courts in the country.
"An effective and prompt administration of justice is a vital component of economic growth. Establishing more courts in the Visayas and Mindanao serves this goal," Escudero concluded. - bohol chronicle
