The Regional Development Council (RDC) is set to activate a Committee on Climate to formulate strategies on how to get adopted with the unpredictable prevailing weather condition as far as the region’s food security is concerned.
National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) Regional Director Arturo Valero said the climate change committee will be activated before the end of this month and would compose of representatives from all concerned stakeholders.
Valero said the committee would tackle issues such the effect of climate change to the food security of Zamboanga Peninsula, which is an agriculture-base region.
Zamboanga Peninsula covers the province of Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga Sibugay and the cities of Dapitan, Dipolog, Isabela, Pagadian and Zamboanga.
Valero disclosed last year’s production of palay, which is the Filipino’s staple food, in the region has dropped due to the occurrence of two flashfloods brought about as an effect of climate change.
National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) data showed that the production of palay went down by four percent and corn by 18 percent last year.
Valero said the committee will tackle best practices and strategies on how to balance the food production with environmental concerns
“We need to balance (food) production with environmental concerns,†he said, noting climate and food security are related.(PNA)
