GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- A woman died while some 600 families were affected by severe floods in the last two days in Koronadal City and Tantangan town in South Cotabato.
Gregorio Presga, chair of Barangay Saravia in Koronadal City, said a woman resident of their village died after she was swept by a flashflood in a creek in the area following heavy rains on Monday afternoon.
He identified the victim as Moreta Bastian, 41, of Sitio El Gawel Zone 1 in Tolosa Village
Presga said Bastian was trying to cross a creek in the area at past 4 p.m. when its water level suddenly rose.
Bastian was swept by the rushing floodwaters and was later rescued by local residents at a portion of the creek near the boundary of Tolosa Village and Purok Ilang-ilang in Barangay Saravia, he said.
“She was on her way home after working at a nearby farm when the flashflood came,” he said in a radio interview.
Presga said the victim sustained injuries on her head and body and died before reaching the South Cotabato Provincial Hospital in Koronadal City.
In Tantangan town, portions of Barangay Poblacion were submerged in floodwaters following heavy rains in the area.
Darwin Dar, action officer of the Tantangan Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Council, said Tuesday the flooding started late Sunday night, forcing some residents to leave their homes.
He said 30 residents evacuated to the municipal evacuation center in Poblacion due to rising floodwaters.
“Some residents reported that there were some areas wherein the floodwaters reached waist to shoulder-deep,” he said.
Dar said the floods mainly affected around 600 households in six of Barangay Poblacion’s 13 puroks, including areas near the municipal hall complex.
As a result of the floods, he said the local government suspended the classes in four elementary and high school situated in Poblacion on Monday.
The official said the municipal government has released initial relief assistance to the affected residents.
“The floods in most of the affected areas already subsided as of this morning but we’re continually monitoring the situation due to the sporadic heavy rains,” he said. (PNA)
