ILIGAN CITY—At least for this city and the rest of Lanao del Norte, this year's consumer welfare month celebration will focus on keeping prices stable through consistent monitoring.
This was the message of Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Provincial Director Ruel Paclipan, as he opened the month-long celebration, highlighting the importance of consumerism on Monday (Oct. 2).
Paclipan noted that despite high demand brought by the influx of evacuees from nearby Marawi City, prices of goods have remained stable in Lanao del Norte.
Still, Paclipan acknowledged that the increased demand for basic goods arising from the ongoing Marawi conflict has also brought in unsafe products from unscrupulous traders.
One of these, he said, are butane canisters that have "proliferated out in the market." Paclipan reminded the consumers against butane canisters that they are unsafe and could potentially cause fire.
Meanwhile, various activities are set for the month-long celebration.
On October 10, the 13th Consumers Quiz will see secondary schools from Lanao del Norte competing among themselves. On the 17th, secondary students will also vie for the first-ever "ulaang Pangmamimili"—a role-playing depicting principles of consumerism.
The CWM celebration will culminate on October 27 with the 2nd Vendors Quiz that will be held at Pala-o and Central markets.
Presidential Proclamation No. 1098 declares October as Consumer Welfare Month (CWM), with the DTI as the lead agency. It aims to disseminate sound consumer information to both public and private sector, including the media on consumer-related matters including policies and technologies that affect the consumers, as well as to recognize the consumer as a vital player in the economy.
