US Marine held in slay of Subic transgender
« on: October 14, 2014, 12:15:30 PM »
By Jaime Laude (The Philippine Star) | Updated October 14, 2014 - 12:00am

MANILA, Philippines - The tall, blond American met buxom, long-haired “Jennifer” in a disco in Subic last Saturday night, and they quickly hit it off.

They checked into a motel before 11 p.m. Half an hour later, the American was seen leaving the motel. His date was found naked in the bathroom, with the head resting on the rim of the toilet bowl. Jennifer – actually transgender Jeffrey Laude, 26 – lay dead with marks of being beaten and strangled.

The suspect, a US Marine whose identity was withheld by authorities until last night, was taken into custody by his superiors aboard an amphibious assault ship docked in Subic Bay.

The soldier was on furlough after taking part in a naval drill between Filipino and US forces in Zambales, when he allegedly killed Laude in Room 1 of Celzone Lodge on Magsaysay Boulevard.

Laude’s address was listed as 5th Street, Drapper West Tapinac, Olongapo City.

The case has brought back memories of a rape case also in Subic in 2005 involving US Marines. In the course of their celebrated trial for rape, the four accused Marines led by Lance Corporal Daniel Smith stayed at the US embassy in Manila despite efforts by local authorities to have them detained in local jails.

An article in the Marine Corps Times said the suspect – who is being held on board the USS Peleliu – belonged to the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines based at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.

The Peleliu was one of the US navy ships that took part in the recent PHIBLEX joint Amphibious Landing Exercises.

The Marine Corps Times said corps officials at the Pentagon and in Hawaii declined to comment on the case. Attempts to reach the US embassy in Manila were not immediately successful, the newspaper said.

When sought for comment, Philippine defense spokesman Peter Paul Galvez said they were “still checking for more details.” But he said they acknowledged efforts by US authorities to cooperate with investigators.

The Marines Corps Times reported that three potential witnesses from the same unit as the suspect were also being held on the Peleliu while investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) and local authorities was ongoing.

A certain Mark Clarence Gelviro, 32, alias “Barbie,” said he and Laude met the soldier at Ambyanz Disco bar on Magsaysay Drive.

On Laude’s request, Gelviro said he accompanied them to Celzone Lodge where the two checked in at around 10:55 p.m.

Gelviro said Laude later asked him to leave as the suspect might discover they were gays.

Celzone personnel said they later saw the suspect leaving the hotel at around 11:30 p.m.

Hotel cashier Elias Galamos said the door of the room was left ajar when he came to check after the suspect had left. He said he discovered the dead Laude naked inside the toilet, partly wrapped in a blanket and with his head resting on the rim of the toilet bowl.

Investigators said Laude bore strangulation marks.

“There was a visible mark of injuries on the victim’s neck, his tongue was protruding and his hair was in disarray,” a report prepared by the Olongapo City Police led by Senior Superintendent Pedrito delos Reyes stated.

Investigators said the suspect was about 25 to 30 years old, blond with short military haircut, and approximately 5’8” to 5’10” tall.

The man was wearing a white and blue striped T-shirt and black short pants.

Police said the room was noticeably in order with the victim’s personal belongings intact.

The victim’s body was taken to the St. Martin Funeral Homes in Olongapo City for autopsy.

Armed Forces of the Philippines Maj. Gen. Domingo Tutaan said the matter is best addressed by the Visiting Forces Agreement Commission and not by the military. – With Cecille Suerte Felipe, Ric Sapnu

:P

The evening for the young US Marine and his Filipino date "Jennifer" began at the Ambyanz Disco Bar in Subic Bay,Olongapo and ended shortly before midnight at the Celzone Lodge where "Jennifer's" lifeless body was found leaning against the toilet  bowl. Jennifer, it turns out was actually not originally a "she" but a "he." A Filipino transgender, Jeffrey Laude, 26, began calling himself "Jennifer" after medical procedures made him look more female than male.

The tragic event that happened on Saturday, October 11 is being investigated by US and Philippine authorities who have so far not released any details. However, Mark Clarence Gelviro, 32, who says he was a good friend of Laude, and goes by the nickname “Barbie,” told reporters that he and Laude met the American at the Disco bar located on Magsaysay Drive. He then accompanied the couple to the Celzone Lodge, a motel where the couple checked into a room at 10:30 pm. Gelviro said Laude then asked him to leave because he did not want the American to find out he was gay.

An hour later, "Jennifer's" American friend was seen leaving the motel by himself. Elias Galamos a Celzone employee found Laude's lifeless body in the bathroom, partially wrapped in a blanket with his headresting against the toilet seat. According to Olongapo City Police Senior Superintendent Pedrito delos Reyes,  there were visible signs of trauma on the victim's neck and his hair was disheveled.

US Navy officials have not released the name of any suspect, but in an unprecedented action, US Pacific Commander Samuel Locklear ordered all US military vessels in the Philippines to remain in port pending an investigation into this killing.

It is unfortunate that such an incident had to happen, especially at this time when the Philippines needs the US military to shore up it's stand against Chinese encroachment of the West Philippine Sea. It is doubly unfortunate because this tragic event was completely preventable. American sailors and marines should have never been allowed to fraternize with the locals as the vast majority of those locals who frequent the "honky-tonk" establishments surrounding former military bases like Subic Naval Base and Clark Air Force Base are mostly predators out to take advantage of the naïveté of US servicemen—young G.I.'s who assume that the Filipinos they meet are all nice, friendly people.

The US military brass know all this. There have been numerous incidents over the decades when US military bases operated on Philippine soil. The last incident occurred in 2005 when a Filipina claimed she was raped by an American soldier, then changed her story after she was allowed to fly to the US. All American military personnel participating in future joint exercises must be thoroughly briefed before coming over.

It is imperative that Philippine and American armed forces work closely together especially now that China has made clear it's hegemonic ambitions. But a close and harmonious working relation means keeping US military personnel away from the locals. Unsupervised fraternization with Filipinos by American soldiers will likely cause continuing friction between both countries and distract from their common objectives. Published 10/14/2014

Laude’s boyfriend arrives

Marc Suselbeck, the German fiancé of Jeffrey ‘Jennifer’ Laude, weeps at the wake for the slain transgender in Olongapo City yesterday.

Meanwhile, Marc Sueselbeck, the German boyfriend of Laude, arrived yesterday at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 to pay his respects to his lover.

“I cannot say much. Jennifer usually picked me up at the airport every time I arrived and now she is not here, so sad,” said Sueselbeck, a financial accountant.

Sueselback said he had been in Manila at least five to six times and “I had good times with Jennifer.”

“We met online and were in a relationship for more than two years.”

He had plans of marrying Jennifer in Thailand next year, “to start life over together.”

They communicated through social media, Sueselbeck said.

Sueselbeck condemned the brutality of Laude’s death, describing the suspect as “sick” and “bloodthirsty.”

Laude’s burial was moved from Oct. 21 to 24 to give more time for friends and relatives to attend the wake.
