Gov. Felipe Nava and some 500 of his constituents were among the thousands of passengers who were stranded in various city ports here late Thursday afternoon due to Typhoon Quinta.
These stranded islanders were on their way home to Guimaras province, barely 15 minutes travel onboard the motorized passenger vessels from mainland Iloilo, but were stranded after the Coast Guard authorities here cancelled early Thursday afternoon all ferry vessels plying Iloilo-Guimaras and vice versa due to rough seas brought about by the storm.
Gov. Nava said some 350 passengers have been stranded at Brgy. Ortiz jetty port while 150 more at the Parola port along Fort San Pedro area.
Stranded passengers had to pass the night elsewhere at the Iloilo port with food assistance provided by the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) here and Gov. Nava himself.
The Guimaras governor likewise confirmed that there were also stranded passengers at the Guimaras port on their way to mainland Iloilo. They were, however, brought to the Guimaras Provincial Capitol for accommodation.
The Coast Guard here has ordered the grounding of all inter-island passenger vessels throughout Western Visayas after the PAGASA placed the city and province of Iloilo and neighboring provinces in Panay island and across Negros island under storm signal number 1. - PNA
