Two women fight over Ignacio Arroyo’s body
Mike Arroyo says no to younger brod’s cremation
By Gil C. Cabacungan
Philippine Daily Inquirer
12:10 am | Sunday, February 5th, 2012

The women in the life of Negros Occidental Rep. Ignacio “Iggy” Arroyo are both claiming his remains.

Alicia “Aleli” Arroyo, the lawmaker’s estranged wife, and her lawyer Lorna Kapunan failed in their mission to bring his body home from London because the director of the mortuary would not turn it over to them.

The director was said to be acting under the instruction of Grace Ibuna, Ignacio’s longtime companion who was at his bedside when he was taken off life support on Jan. 26. The director allegedly continued to recognize Ibuna as the lawmaker’s next of kin because Alicia Arroyo failed to show proof that her marriage had not been annulled.

Ibuna wanted to have the lawmaker’s remains cremated, according to Kapunan.

But Jose Miguel “Mike” Arroyo on Saturday told the Inquirer in Manila that his younger brother’s body would be brought home by the latter’s eldest child, Bianca, either Sunday or Monday.

“I think they (Aleli and Kapunan) will come home empty-handed. It is Bianca who will bring her father’s body here in a day or two,” he said.

Bianca is Ignacio’s daughter by his first wife, Marilyn Jacinto, a sister of rock musician, businessman and radio DJ Ramon “RJ” Jacinto. Mike Arroyo sent her last week to London to arrange for the repatriation of her father’s body.

Ignacio’s marriage to Marilyn Jacinto has been annulled.

No cremation

Mike Arroyo refused to comment on the public dispute between the women that his brother had left behind. But he was insistent that the body be brought home intact.

“I called my niece, Bianca, about [the supposed planned cremation], and she told me that it was not true. She said she was coming home with her father and she told me there will be no cremation,” he said.

Ibuna has been accused by Alicia Arroyo’s camp of misrepresenting herself as Ignacio’s wife.

Ignacio and Alicia Arroyo had been separated for six years but their marriage is still legally valid.

Alicia Arroyo and her lawyer flew to London last week and announced that they would take full control of the funeral arrangements and bar Ibuna from the memorial services.

According to Alicia Arroyo’s text message to reporters, the body would have arrived on Saturday and brought immediately to the family residence in La Vista, Quezon City, for the first of a series of wakes before interment at the North Cemetery in Manila late this week.

Common scenario when a military or police officer dies. :)

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

Iggy's Widow Fails To Bring Home Body

MANILA, Philippines — A reported plan by the long-time companion of Congressman Ignacio “Iggy” T. Arroyo to have his remains cremated has ratcheted up the dispute between two women claiming the body.

Alicia Rita “Aleli” Morales Arroyo, the estranged wife of the Negros Occidental representative who died last January 26 after a long bout with liver cancer, had flown to London to bring home her husband’s body.

She was expecting to be back in Manila with the remains with her last night.

But Mrs. Arroyo ran into complications in London, particularly after the funeral parlor refused to turn over the body to her.

Former starlet Grace Ibuna, who has been living with the congressman for the past six years, has somehow prevailed on the director of the funeral parlor not to release the body to the wife.

It was Ibuna who reportedly asked doctors to remove Arroyo from the life support system after he was declared brain dead.

A member of the Arroyo family in Manila who requested anonymity said he has received information that Ibuna was even planning to cremate Arroyo’s remains.

Before she left for London, Mrs. Arroyo had laid out the funeral and burial plans for her husband, contracted the services of the Loyola Memorial Services whose personnel waited in vain at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport for the body to arrive Saturday.

Mrs. Arroyo also gave express orders not to allow Ibuna to attend any of the rites.

Asked to verify the report on the planned cremation, violinist John Lesaca, husband of Iggy Arroyo’s sister, former congresswoman Marilou Arroyo, said the family has yet to get confirmation from London, but he stressed that former First Gentleman Jose Miguel and Marilou were opposed to it.

“We all want to see him,” said Lesaca who pointed out that the Arroyo siblings agreed to defer to the wishes of Aleli Arroyo with regards the funeral arrangements.

It was not immediately known if the cremation had already been carried out.

Mrs. Arroyo has threatened to file criminal charges against Ibuna, saying it was her husband’s wish to be taken to their family home in La Vista, Quezon City, and buried beside his mother at the Manila North Cemetery.

Ibuna and her father, former San Juan City Mayor Nicanor Ibuna, have reportedly hired a British lawyer to stop the funeral parlor from turning over the body to Mrs. Arroyo and officials of the Philippine embassy to the Court of St. James.

Officials of the parlor have demanded from Mrs. Arroyo proof that she remains the legal wife, not Ibuna, who allegedly passed herself off as the spouse and the next of kin.

Even the London Clinic reportedly got instructions from Ibuna when doctors decided on Thursday to remove the comatose Arroyo from the life support system.

Representations made by embassy officials were ignored by the funeral parlor which apparently made the decision to avoid legal issues that may be brought against it by Ibuna’s lawyer.

“Even the Philippine embassy was shocked. Lorna and Aleli would not have flown to London if papers were not order,” said Irene Garcia, the associate of Lorna Kapunan, Mrs. Arroyo’s lawyer.

Garcia said that Aleli received assurance from embassy officials that the body was ready for repatriation, but the widow was dismayed when the funeral director “flip-flopped” because Ibuna allegedly ordered cremation.

weird.  wa awayi sa buhi pa, karon na hinoong patay na.

my own take:  europe man ni, tingali ug may chance si grace ibuna kay recognized man didto ang certain "rights" sa partner bisag wa kasla.  problema lang, they're not british citizens, and our own laws just might prevail because of the involvement of the embassy.  di na lang unta dugangan ni grace ibuna ang iyang pabaga.  as a companion of 4 years, di man tingali na unsa kadugaya.  kun 20 years pa, basin makalulooy pa siya.

mag-antos na lang diay siya sa hilom.  she would have been more dignified that way and would honor her common-law husband more.

bilib sad ko aning bayhana.  di ang-ang.  una niyang giwani si sharon cuneta the artista, karon si aleli arroyo na pod the former chair of the philippine stock exchange.  according to showbiz chismis, ni-give up kuno si gabe concepcion ani niya kay mangamras kuno kun mag-away sila...
