where did manila go? hehe. i remember some young manilans who are too engrossed with their city, they've never gone south of luzon really, that they believe that anything south of manila is so backward, they had to ask what mode of transportation cebu has and whether there are cars there or not. pissed off thus, i had to tell them that we use brooms for traveling in cebu the way harry potter does.
I'm the opposite, I usually tell the Filipinos at the hospital to speak to me either in 1) Bisaya or 2) English. I am up front with them that I don't do Tagalog and my mastery of that dialect is sub par. Mo ingon sila, "Arrogant ka talaga, Doctor." Pero its true tho, just telling the truth.
One nurse who comes from Quezon City said to other nurses, "Oh, Dr. Lorenzo is not the only one. All Cebuanos are like that, they think they are higher than other Filipinos." Na suko gajod ko.
I told them that I grew up in Bohol and Cebu and thus my fluency is primarily in BINISAYANG CEBUANO, and not in Tagalog, which is a very foreign dialect when compared to Bisaya. Second, I told them that Cebuanos and Boholanos ave much to be proud about, we love our province and our region because in comparison to some parts of Luzon, it is safer and far more comfortable. Third, I said that most Cebuanos prefer to speak Cebuanos because in Cebu and Bohol we speak Bisaya and not Tagalog. Tagalog, I told them, is only the mode of communication when we leave Visayas. As for the comment of being "arrogant" i told her that there is nothing arrogant about admitting one's limitation in speaking Tagalog.
I did say to her this, "But you're right tho about Cebuano Doctors. There's a lot of us."
The head of Surgery of my current hospital is a graduate of University of the East, and a Cebuano. The head of Psychiatry is a graduate of Cebu Institute of Medicine and comes from Southern Leyte. These are heads, not staff physicians. Of the 10 Filipino doctors that I know of in our hospital, 6 of them are Bisaya. The rest are from Luzon.
I said to the nurses, "You all should be talking in Bisaya not tagalog. Since most of us physicians are BISAYA."
