Police investigators are now looking at the debt angle as a possible motive for Wednesday’s killing of public school teacher Romeo A. Duran who was shot dead in front of his class by a lone gunman.
“Ang utang ang lain nga gi-tan-aw sa mga imbestigador, (Unpaid debts is one angle being looked into by the investigators),†said Chief Supt. Lani-O Nerez, police director for Central Visayas.
Chief Ins. Teodulfo Manatad III, chief of Argao police station, said they were tracking the debts of Duran to identify who he was indebted to.
Manatad said he hoped they would establish the amount of debt and from whom Duran borrowed the money. But he said they were not disregarding the motive of land dispute.
But Manatad said Duran didn’t have any debt in his home province in Negros Occidental.
“Wala na siya naotangan didto kay dinhi naman na suay nagtudlo, so diri ra sa Cebu ang amu gipangita. Mao amua gi-palawman ang imbestigasyon kung unsa kadako iya otang ug kinsa iya gi-utangan,†Manatad said.
There are also other motives that had emerged in the ongoing investigation but authorities were still looking into some possible angles aside from the land dispute.
So far based on their investigation, Manatad said that teachers and witnesses said that didn’t know if Duran had a relationship with anybody.
A relative of Duran who refused to be named said Duran's recent acquisition of a motorcycle must have triggered the suspect to kill the victim.
Last Jan. 30, Duran acquired a motorcycle through a loan from EMCOR which he has not started paying yet.
Senior Supt. Ruben Cuizon, chief of Investigation Detection and Management Bureau (IDMB) said records showed that the motorcycle was acquired through a loan and Duran had not paid anything yet except for the downpayment of P4,000.
The motorcycle was however taken by EMCOR last Wednesday.
Based on their initial investigation, police said Duran did not have the capacity to get a bigger amount of loan because his net pay slip dated June of 2009 was only about P3,000.
Police were not discounting all possible motives for the killing, including sibling rivalry and debt.
Duran, 52, single, a native of Kabankalan City in Negros Occidental, rented a house in barangay Binlod in Argao town.
He suffered a bullet wound on his left face after he was shot by an unidentified suspect wearing shorts, blue T-shirt and orange cap who barged into his classroom.
The victim was sitting in front while checking the papers of his students when the suspect entered the classroom.
According to SPO1 Arnold Abenir, the suspect even greeted Duran “Good Afternoon!†and he replied “Unsay ato?
The suspect then shot Duran and fled with three companions on a red XRM motorcycle without plate number.
