Suspect Covid-19 patient dies at Dumaguete hospital
« on: April 25, 2020, 05:57:42 PM »
DUMAGUETE CITY — A 79-year-old male patient with suspect coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) died early Wednesday at a private hospital here ahead of the release of results of his throat swab tests.

The patient from Tayasan, Negros Oriental, who was admitted to the hospital on Sunday died at around 12:20 a.m., said Dr. Liland Estacion, assistant provincial health officer.

The suspect Covid-19 case had co-morbidities, such as cancer and was “terminally-ill” with sepsis, severe pneumonia, diabetes, and heart failure, she said.

On Monday, throat swab samples were taken from the patient, and sent on Tuesday morning to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) in Cebu for testing, she added.

Estacion said the man was immediately laid to rest on the same day he died, with only a few family members allowed to attend the burial.

She assured that proper protocols were followed in the disposal of the body.

Estacion said those who came in contact with the elderly man were also throat-swabbed and asked to do self-quarantine at home.

She added that the suspect Covid-19 case, who was “bed-ridden” did not have any contact with the late Tayasan councilor who tested positive of the coronavirus and died last March at a private hospital in this city.

His swab test results are expected later on Wednesday or early Thursday, she said.

Meanwhile, records at the Provincial Health Office showed that 21 swab test results returned here on April 20 all tested negative, while 31 more throat swab samples of suspect and probable cases were sent to VSMMC for testing.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the PHO reported seven cases of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI), seven Moderate Acute Respiratory Infection (MARI), 27 Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) without co-morbidities, and three ILI with co-morbidities.

Persons who are asymptomatic and are under monitoring and quarantine totaled 860 while persons who are asymptomatic and had completed quarantine reached 13,193.

These persons mostly have a history of travel and a few had contact with a confirmed Covid-19 case, including front-liners.

The total number of individuals tested so far reached 201, with 197 negative results and four confirmed positive.

Of the four confirmed cases, two have died, one has already recovered and released from the hospital, while another is still admitted but is on the way to recovery, having tested negative already in the third test and in fact, has been extubated, Estacion said.

Under the new classification of Covid-19 cases being used by the Department of Health (DOH), ILIs (both with or without co-morbidities) fall under the classification as “suspect”, while SARI and MARI cases are considered as “probable”.

The early classification of COVID-19 cases, namely, patients under investigation (PUI) and persons under monitoring (PUM) had also been dropped.

While the DOH is using its latest three classifications of Covid-19 cases – suspect, probable, and confirmed – health authorities here are using the SARI, MARI, and ILI classification according to guidelines set by the DOH Region 7, said Dr. Socrates Villamor, provincial chief of the Department of Health here. (PNA)
