After improvement has been done on road conditions, the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Wednesday said it is now mulling the imposition of a speed limit on the 24-kilometer stretch Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue (EDSA).

MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando tasked the MMDA traffic engineering center to find out if there’s an observable relationship between the agency’s enhanced Organized Bus Route (OBR) system and traffic regulations like reckless driving and yellow lane policies and safety before an appropriate speed limit could be applied.

But as the study is still ongoing, the MMDA chief said there is yet no speed limit on EDSA which, he said, is supposed to be a “non-stop highway.” Because of this, he said that motorists must be able to stop their vehicles within the line of sight.

“I am appealing to motorists to adhere to a US-based road safety organization’s core belief that in the absence of a speed limit, they should always ensure that they can stop comfortably on their own side of the road within the distance that they know to be clear,” he said.

Presidential aspirant Fernando began considering the imposition of the speed limit following the mishap early morning Tuesday on Santolan st. and EDSA that left an optometrist dead and four others injured.
