Something Special about the Philippines
« on: July 14, 2007, 09:32:37 AM »
By Rey Anthony Chiu
Bohol Journalist for the Philippine Information Agency

Several Filipinos gripe about just anything this time, but a non-Filipino and Intel General Manager Robin Martin believes the negative perception is disproportionate to reality.

Martin, who heads a company that has been in the Philippines for 28 years hinted that there is still so much in the Philippines but negative perceptions.

He cited that the country, in the last decade has transformed itself so much, the Metro Manila skyline took on a drastic re-landscaping, a fact started after the Philippines made crucial innovations in the field of telecom industry.

He said after the billions of dollars of investments in both fixed line and cellular networks, it produced a system with over 5,000 kms. of fiber optic backbone that offers a competitive cost to make the country a major information technology hub.

From a fixed line capacity of about 900T in 1995, we now have over 7 million, which allowed cellular phones to grow from practically inexistent in 1995 to over 11 million line capacity today, he said.

Since then, its leaps and bounds for the country, as opposed to the publicity that tends to overshadow country’s image of glory.

He cited the Filipino worker’s competitive edge by saying: if you have a Toshiba laptop, it’s almost certain its assembled in Sta. Rosa Laguna, and if it has a PC-Cillin anti-virus software that immunizes your system from any virus, then it must a Trend-Micro software product based in Eastwood Libis Quezon City.

His company, Intel, makers of the famed Pentium IV would never have put up its biggest assembly and testing operations worldwide in the country if the country were not well managed.

Citing yet another industry giant, Texas Instruments he said has been operating in Baguio for over 20 years. The Baguio plant is TI’s largest producer of Digital Signal Processor chips in the world. DSP chips are the brains behind cellphones. TI's Baguio plant produces the chip that powers 100% of all NOKIA cellphones and 80% of Erickson cellphones in the world is manned by Filipino workers.

“If you drive a BENZ, BMW, or a VOLVO, there is a good chance that the ABS system in your car was made in the Philippines, he pointed out.

Since the 1995 telecom industry innovation, majority of the top ten U.S. Call Center firms have set up operations in the Philippines. America Online (AOL) has 1,000 people in Clark answering 90% of AOL's global e-mail inquiries, he said.

This is one area in which the country offers competition rates in terms of value for money.

As for competitive manpower, he said Procter and Gamble has over 400 people in Makati (average age 23 years) doing back-up office work to their Asian operations including Finance, Accounting, Human Resources and Payments Processing.

Production talents-wise, the Philippines, through Ford has been exporting cars in quantity.

The government may be riddled still with holes but the American Intel top man said it is shedding off graft and corruption slowly but surely.

“This is the first time in history that a former president is in jail and facing charges of plunder. Despite all odds, we are still pursuing the ill-gotten wealth of Marcos now enjoyed by his unrepentant heirs”. (rachiu/PIA)

Impressive, bitaw. In 10-15 years, the Phils will be a regional giant. Hopefully our economy stays strong and graft and corruption decreases in today's rate. Tinood jood, Philippines will be another "Singapore".
