Solon backs DepEd random drug testing
« on: May 04, 2020, 02:45:29 PM »
ZAMBOANGA CITY -- Second District Rep. Celso Lobregat on Monday expressed support to the plan of the Department of Education (DepEd) to implement random drug testing in public schools.

Lobregat issued the statement after the DepEd announced it plans to conduct random drug tests in public schools, specifically for senior high school and college students.

The mayor, however, said the drug testing should be random for the students while mandatory for teachers, DepEd and Commission on Higher Education (CHED) officials to ensure the education sector is drug-free.

“They (education officials) must comply first to erase public doubts and to gain the trust and confidence of the students that their teachers are law compliant,” he added.

He said the DepEd should also ensure that the rights of the students are respected and should be with the consent of the parents.

“This process should be properly reviewed and utmost consideration should be done, making sure that this will not cause psychological effects to students who will be discovered positive for drug use, the intervention and confidentiality of its results should be carefully examined,” Lobregat said.

DepEd has allotted PhP39 million to fund the drug testing program for public school students and teachers that will be implemented in partnership with the Department of Health (DOH). (TPGJR/PNA)
