SoCot alarmed by rising suicide cases

GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- Health personnel in South Cotabato province have raised alarm over the rising cases of suicide among residents.

Jade Javellana, mental health program coordinator of the Integrated Provincial Health Office, said Tuesday they recorded a sudden increase this year in suicide rates in the province’s 10 towns and lone city.

Since January, she said they already documented 21 suicide cases, including one visiting foreign national.

She said the cases involved 15 males and five females who were mostly suffering from depression and other related problems.

"The reasons are actually diverse. We also have cases that were due to love and passion, frustration, family problems, health issues and mental challenges,” Javellana said in a media forum.

Citing their assessment, she said the victims ended their lives mainly due to the “feeling of hopelessness.”

The profile of the involved victims are students, jobless persons, a housewife, a tourist and elderly, she said.

Owing to this, Javellana said they have launched a series of trainings this month to further capacitate health workers in the handling of cases of depression and mental illness.

Such move is part of the activities for the province’s ongoing observance of the National Suicide Prevention Month.

She said the trainings are focused on equipping local health workers in creating strategies that would help address the problem.

These activities are spearheaded by Lake Sebu Municipal Health Officer Dr. Josephine Bayquin, she said.

Javellana said they are also promoting open discussions on suicides as it is considered a form of a therapy, especially for depressed individuals who have attempted to end their lives.

"It's okay to ask them why they attempted to kill themselves. We need to talk to them and not leave them at such state,” she added.(AC/PNA)
