The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) allowed on Monday the use of cameras and tape recorders during the
selection process for the next Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (SC).
"The Judicial and Bar Council has also resolved to allow cameras and tape recorders in the room where interviews of the candidates are held as well as live TV and radio coverage of the proceedings," SC Acting spokesperson Atty. Maria Victoria Gleoresty Guerra said in a press conference.
The position of Chief Justice was vacated with the impeachment of former Chief Justice Renato C. Corona for culpable violation of the Constitution and betrayal of public trust last May 29.
The JBC's latest ruling deletes Section 5, Rule 10 of the JBC Rules which provides that the interviews shall be conducted in public.
During the interview, only the members of the Council can ask questions to the candidate.
Among other things, the candidate can be made to explain any possible complaint or opposition against him. The proceedings shall be in writing.
Cameras and tape recorders, however, shall not be allowed inside the room. No live TV and radio coverage of the proceedings shall be permitted.
