GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- Police tightened security in the entire city in time for the five-day 19th Tuna Festival that will formally open on Friday, Sept. 1.

Chief Insp. Geovanni Ladeo, chief of city police’s public safety company, said Thursday that all police units in the city have been ordered to step up security measures in line with the festivity.

He said around 1,200 police personnel and elements from other support security units have been deployed in festival venues, especially at the city’s oval plaza grounds, and other areas where crowds will converge.

The enhanced security measures are part of the comprehensive security plan earlier laid out by the city police and the Army-led Joint Task Force (JTF) GenSan.

"It’s a multi-layered security plan, focusing on measures to ensure the safe, smooth and orderly conduct of the festival,” he said in a statement.

Ladeo said the security measures included the conduct of regular mobile operations under operation plans or Oplans Sita and Kapkap.

Aside from elements from the JTF GenSan, he said the security operations are being augmented by personnel from the Police Regional Office-12, the city’s civil security unit and force multipliers from barangay peacekeeping teams.

He urged the public to be extra vigilant and immediately report suspicious personalities and activities.

"We advise the public to be vigilant and be aware of personalities who are coming in their barangays," Ladeo said.

Col. Adonis Bajao, JTF GenSan commander, said the city’s security situation remains stable quoting their own monitoring.

He said they have adopted all necessary measure to maintain such status, especially during the festival week from Sept. 1 to 5.

Aside from the Tuna Festival, the city will host the annual National Tuna Congress on Sept. 6 to 8 that is expected to gather around 500 domestic and foreign delegates.

The city will also host the first-ever Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines-East Asean Growth Area or BIMP-Eaga arts and culture festival dubbed “Budayaw” on Sept. 20 to 24.(AVE/PNA)
