RP’s Seaweeds Rake $3B in Export Earnings
« on: December 14, 2008, 05:52:29 AM »
The seaweed or hydrocolloids industry in the country continues to grow by 10 to 14 percent annually resulting to huge world market earnings of $ 3 billion this year.

This was revealed by biologist and seaweed consultant Ronald Simbajon in his presentation at the Mindanao Investment Conference (Min iCon) recently held in this city.

Simbajon said there are three big major companies serving as key players of the industry with state-of-the-art facilities, including 18 local processors.

China is identified as the emerging major buyer for raw material of the carrageenan industry.

Statistics showed five years ago, over 100 carrageenan processors were already operating. There and more than 50 additional today.

The carrageenan industry requires about 80,000 metric tons of dried seaweeds annually.

The growing seaweed industry has benefited 160,000 coastal and island dwelling families and allied services farming of over 20,000 hectares.

Simbajon said the seaweed industry is a lucrative business. One-fourth hectare can generate an annual income of P300,000 at an investment cost of P80,000.

The one-fourth hectare planted to seaweed would produce 1,000 kg. per cropping within a 60-day cycle.

Seaweed raw material could be applied to various food and non-food products and liquids, among others: jellies, ham, patties, sauce, juice, petfood, toothpaste, ice cream, beer, milk and chicken.

Aside from economic benefits, seaweed is also a catalyst for ecological preservation since its biomass attracts various marine species that provides sanctuary and breeding ground for marine life while dramatically minimizing destructive fishing practices, Simbajon said.

In Mindanao, seaweed farming thrives in the farmlands of Zamboanga, Cagayan, Cotabato, Butuan, Davao Region and General Santos.

There was a documentary film shown in German television about seaweed farming in Bohol. The sea is facing Cebu, ( it was quite sometime hence I can´t remember the exact location).
This project was assisted by Siliman University, San Carlos University and a Canadian institution. The seawater needs a consistent temperature and a certain degree of salinity.
I was interested because this projects could be given German assistance if it could generate income for the locals.

Seaweed farm in Lembongan Bali, Indonesia.

Raq,

Among ig-agaw sa Hingutanan Island, Talibon dugay ra nga nag sea weed or guso farming, since high school pa ko hangtod karon.

Karon among companya dire nangita ug Sea Sponge supplier bisan asa sa kalibutan. Do you know anybody in Bohol?

So, kun dunay tag U$D 0.25 or less, pahibaw-a ko. Basta kini nga sea sponge processed na, meaning bleached, dried and light brown in color, 3-4 inches in diameter.

Kini nga sponge gi gamit sa paligo sa new born nga mga bata ug in demand ni worldwide.

Thanks Macky for your postings, now I am sure to tell about this area. A seaweed fisherman or farmer earns 20,000 Phil pesos per harvest.

Thanks Manay,

Seaweed farming is not only hot cash, but also provides a clean living. It cleans the water, provides oxygen, provides shelter for small fishes and shrimps.

The plastic it produce is biodegradable and will become top soil.

If you remember Mr. Rostico Dabatos, the guy in the reception of DFA when you renew your passport in Cebu, he is my causin and they have a sea weed farm in Talibon since I was in high school.

seaweed farming in the visayas area has been ongoing since the mid 80s. from 1984 - 1993, there was a world-bank funded project called central visayas regional projects (CVRP) which was implemented in the provinces of cebu, bohol, negros oriental and siquijor. the project had both upland and nearshore fishery components. in bohol, the project area included the municipalities of talibon, bien unido and ubay. among the nearshore fishery technologies, seaweed farming was one of those technologies that was introduced to fisherfolks in the project area. specifically, the seaweed farms that were established propagated the species called eucheuma. i'm sure some of those farms that were established then are still in existence today. but even before CVRP started to introduce eucheuma farming, there were several seaweed farms in cebu that were already well established. the biggest buyer of dried seaweeds in cebu that time was shemberg marketing which was owned by mr. benson dakay. these people are the pioneers of seaweed farming in central visayas. now, the industry has spread to a lot of places in mindanao as well. last year, the DAR project i was working with was able to assist in the establishment of several seaweed farms in dinagat island, surigao del norte. the seaweed industry has indeed grown considerably over the last 20 years or so, and bohol ought to be part of this growth. i just hope that the agriculture department has the technical capability and resources to promote and facilitate the replication of seaweed farming to many other places in bohol, as carrageenan continues to be used as materials for processed foods, cosmetics, and toothpaste.

shemberg has been an established exporter of seaweed exporter since the 80s. if there are any boholanos who are enterprising enough to buy up all the seaweeds cultured in bohol, pwede gud kaayo. however, because the international port is in cebu, any bohol-based exporter will still need to establish facilities in cebu. so, it will turn out nga mas sayon kun ipasa na lang sa shemberg. unless you find a buyer nga mas taas ug buying price.

i think the best way for the seaweeds farmer in bohol is to put up a cooperative if they don't have one. it can really help them augment their income in so many ways because they can control what they sold and their income will be solidified plus they can use it for another income generating project.

nice idea, bnc. this proposed coop can act as either middleman between bohol seaweed farmers and shemberg (or any other cebu-based exporter) or they can operate as an exporter, thus becoming a competition for shemberg and other cebu-based dried seaweed exporters. but this is going to be a business decision this proposed coop will have to make based on what is most cost effective.

Example daghan man kanato nga naa sa abroad, so kung dunay companya nga nangita ug for example sea weed or basket, ila dayon nga i-broadcast diri sa Tubag Bohol para kung dunay mga manggamaay ug basket mo respond dayon unya ma establish ang contact para direct export na ug dili na mo agi ug middlemen. This way, we could eliminate the middle men which is only making money without doing any effort.

Ang akong trabaho diri, International Importer ug Exporter, so kung duna kamoy pangutana kung unsa-on ang mga pamaagi sa pag import ug export, please feel free to ask on-line. I will not hesitate to give my free advise and guidance just for the sake of the Boholanos to learn Import / Export procedures and its International formalities.

5. Ang Hong Kong International Sourcing Companies Such as http://www.Alibaba.Com for example will sell through thier website in the internet at $2.50 per piece.

So, you see kung pila ang nakapahimolos nga mga middlemen sa kahago sa atong mga basket maker/waver?

So, kung dunay taga Tubag Bohol didto sa Norway, si Ginger for example nga naka hearing nga dunay nangita ug baskets, perhaps mo announce dayon siya diri sa TB ug kung kinsa to nga TB members nga naa sa Bohol, iya dayon nga orderon ang requirements. And then, kung ready na ang shipment, pick-upon dayon sa forwarder nga paid by the company in Norway as Ex-works terms or FOB meaning Freight on Board (ang company gihapon mo bayad ug mo arrange sa shipment).

Conclusion, instead of earning P5 per basket through various middlemen, mo earn na siya ug $2.5 per basket kay direct export na man.

Do you know nga mao ni ang nag buhi sa Hong-kong ever since separate sila sa China, even without natural resources and without skilled labours. Trading lang ang ilang gi saligan kay small island without resources & skills sila and back then, Hong-kong was the richest economy (Per capita income) in Asia before they joined back to China.

So hope you get what I mean folks.

Hoy, ajaw baja mo pagtoo nga mo lansar ko ug baranggay captain as Valencia, lingaw-lingaw ra man gajod ning aho. Bibo jamo', an?

For Your Information ( not relevant) I browse Flickr and discovered wonderful pictures taken by FAHRL and his trips to the north part of Bohol. He got beautiful photos from Jetafe  and descriptions of seaweeds farming in Bien Unido.

Gahi man diay na, murag goma.

What are Sea Sponges Used for?

Sea sponges are very simple animals that live on the ocean floor. They attach themselves permanently to an anchorage, and move sea water through their bodies, filtering out tiny organisms for food. The channels that the water flows through account for their hole-riddled structure, and is what makes their composition so useful.

They are harvested by divers; sponge-diving has been a family tradition in many areas around the Mediterranean Sea and off the coast of Florida in the U.S. They have been used as cleaning tools for thousands of years.

Manufactured cellulose sponges have decreased the market for natural sea sponges, and for common household cleaning use, they are certainly sufficient and much cheaper. Still, there are some applications where you might want to spend the extra money to get the genuine article.

If you love your car, you might want a large natural sea sponge to wash it with. When wet, sea sponges are very soft, much softer than their artificial cousins, and much less likely to damage a finish.

Some women prefer the gentle texture of a sea sponge to apply makeup, and remove it. Artists have always used sea sponges, both in clean-up of their tools and as another way to apply paint to a surface. Home decorators are now often 'sponging' paint on walls to create a particular look, such as a faux marble or stone.

One of the most interesting recent (and more than likely ancient) applications of sea sponges is as natural tampons. Several lines of natural bodycare products now offer sea sponge tampons, which are nothing more than sea sponges of a particular size. The sea sponge is soaked in water, squeezed as dry as possible, and then inserted into the vagina, where it absorbs the menstrual flow. If it is uncomfortable, the user can simply trim away some of the sponge to get a more comfortable 'fit'. The sponge can be removed and rinsed and reinserted every few hours until the user's cycle has ceased. It can then be cleaned with vinegar, or peroxide and air dried before being stored for future use. When cleaned properly, a sea sponge used as a tampon can last six months or more, and is much more earth-friendly than disposable tampons. They also do not carry the risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome that regular tampons pose.

Sea sponges are a renewable resource; unless the oceans become too polluted for them to live, we can count on a steady supply.
