The
Philippine National Police (PNP), the Department of Health (DOH) and other government agencies in Mountain Province took part in the rescue, retrieval and treatment of 30 victims of vehicular accident in Besao town Tuesday afternoon. Fifteen survived the latest road mishap some 100 kilometers north of Baguio City.
Police Senior Superintendent Fortunato Alban, PNP Mountain Province provincial director, said the police and volunteer residents rushed victims of the
jeepney which crashed into a ravine to the Besao District Hospital Tuesday night, the nearest government health facility in that hinterland area.
"Nine of the
jeepney passengers died on the spot. Three died on arrival at the hospital. Three died while undergoing treatment. Fifteen of those we rescued survived and remain under treatment for serious physical injuries. The driver was among the survivors. Our rescuers have to rush some 70 meters down from the road in order to help the victims," Alban recalled.
Based on the initial police investigation, the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle which hit a muddy and stony portion of a landslide before the ill-fated vehicle plunged into the ravine. - pna
