THE BUREAU of Internal Revenue has issued guidelines that
relieve delinquent taxpayers of surcharges or compromise penalties on either failing to file tax returns or having filed ones that do not reflect appropriate amounts.
This means that taxpayers who avail of the so-called abatement program are spared from paying an additional 25 percent of the tax they still owe the government or any penalty that the BIR offers to those who settle their obligations by means of compromise.
However, under Revenue Regulations No. 9-2010 dated Sept. 13, taxpayers who choose to amend their tax returns still have to shell out the amount they avoided paying, plus 20 percent interest.
Internal Revenue Commissioner Kim Henares said many such taxpayers have recently expressed willingness to voluntarily file and pay taxes or “rectify†the returns that have been filed previously.
Henares said these taxpayers were also willing to pay tax deficiencies, although they did request for an abatement of the penalties.
