ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The Department of Tourism (DOT) has registered 500,000 tourist arrivals since January this year in Region 9 or Western Mindanao.

Marilou Silorio, DOT regional tourism operations officer, on Wednesday said social media and promo fares are among the contributory factors that entice tourists to visit the region.

Silorio said the foreign tourists who visited the region included Americans, Chinese, Canadian, Indians, and Australians. The rest are “balikbayans” and domestic tourists.

In Region 9, Silorio said the top tourist destinations are Dapitan, Dipolog and Zamboanga Cities.

She said there are tourists who come to the region to visit places like Sta. Cruz Island, Jose Rizal Shrine and other eco-tourism destinations while the others for business purposes.

“In terms of products, we have so much to offer. We have better products compared to other (tourist) destinations and the places (to visit) are very proximate to each other,” she said.

She added that the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival, which is being celebrated every October, is also a tourist attraction event.

Silorio said they are optimistic that this year’s number of tourist arrivals will surpass last year’s record of 679,080 tourists. (PNA)
