Nine flights from and to Davao were cancelled while another flight was diverted to Cebu after a Cebu Pacific plane carrying 165 passengers overshot the runaway at the Davao International Airport Sunday night.

In an advisory, the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) said among these flights were Cebu Pacific flights 5J 970 (Davao-Manila) 5J 969/972, 5J 979/980, and 5J 973/974 (Manila-Davao-Manila) and 5J 216/210 (Davao-Cagayan De Oro-Cebu).

Other affected flights were those of Philippine Airlines such as PR 820, PR 821, PR 822 and PR 823.

“Flights were cancelled due to runaway closure at Davao airport due to obstruction,” MIAA said.

The diverted flight to Cebu was Philippine Airlines flight PR 819.

Cebu Pacific flight 5J 971 landed safely from Manila but veered off to the right side of the Davao International Airport runway during a heavy down pour in the province at about 7 p.m.

Emergency crew from the FBIA rushed to the scene and helped evacuate the passengers. Initial reports revealed that all 165 passengers escaped the incident unscathed.

A statement from Cebu Pacific disclosed that all passengers had been safely shuttled to the airport terminal and that all their needs had been taken cared for.

The nose landing gear of the aircraft got stuck in the grassy portion of the runway.

The heavy downpour has made it even more difficult to free the disabled aircraft and clear the runway.

As of 11 p.m. Sunday, the disabled aircraft was still stuck along the side of the runway forcing airport officials to close it for operations. (Raymund Antonio and Anjo Perez)
