Pinoys love mimicry, that is, to adhere to form rather than
substance, to ape the ways of others without understanding why.
Pinoys are the security guards, for instance, who go through the
useless exercise of frisking shoppers at malls because of
purported "terrorist" threat. Or, they are those who merely parrot
catch phrases like "democratic processes", "peaceful change", "rule
of law" and believe that we are a democracy just because we have

Filipinos can distinguish between what is real and what is mere
charade. They know that "terrorism" is a spectre created to justify
repression. They clearly see that democracy in this country is a
parody, "democratic processes" are held hostage by the ruling elite
to be used for their purposes, "peaceful change" is impossible,
the "rule of law" illusory, and, elections are simply the means to
choose who among the contending thieves and charlatans are given the
prerogative to steal and fool the people for the next term in

Pinoys find security in the safe, familiar, tested, conventional and
conservative. They eschew all forms of original thought. Bold new
ideas especially frighten them. Hence, many Pinoys simply withdraw
into the familiar environs of their private lives rather than respond
to national crises. And Pinoys who do show concern simply revert to
old concepts and methods, like the EDSA model for "revolutions" and
the reformist or parliamentary path in transforming Philippine
society. They proudly herald these as the "democratic" , "non-violent"
or even "Christian" way.

Filipinos do not let fear hinder them from navigating unchartered
waters or blazing new paths, not for its own sake though, but because
of a deep understanding of reality. Hence, Filipinos exert effort in
studying the situation, comprehending the causes of national
problems, formulate intelligent solutions and act on them.

Pinoys have abandoned any capacity for critical thought, which is a
logical corollary of their failure to appreciate new ideas. They
think on the basis of narrow-minded bias and prejudice without
testing their long-standing beliefs. And if ever they do criticize,
that is in order to dismiss, nay, virulently condemn, revolutionary
ideas just because they are unfamiliar.

Filipinos are ever conscious of the need to criticize not only other
viewpoints but even their own. They constantly seek validation from
ever-changing situations, wants and needs and are not afraid to adapt
and accept error. Filipinos do not hesitate to learn from others and
others' experiences.

For Pinoys, the path towards national salvation lies in choosing the
right person, a sort of messiah, to lead the country. Pinoys do not
wish to make sacrifices and take active participation in the task for
national liberation but are content in leaving the responsibility to
a particular political candidate or popular leader.

Filipinos decide and act on the basis of ideals and principles and
not personalities. For them, the primodial question is not "WHO" will
lead but "WHAT" are we fighting for? Filipinos believe that once
their ideology and advocacies have been defined, the rise of
particular leaders will inevitably follow. It is through the struggle
that leaders are molded and recognized. Leaders are not simply
groomed and appointed.

Pinoys take the reductionist approach in analyzing national problems
by simplifying their causes and solutions, i.e. "the country is poor
because of lack of discipline", "if we only learn to follow simple
traffic rules and pay taxes, we can be prosperous".

Filipinos take time to study, analyze and think. They have the
ability to trace the causes of national problems to their social,
economic and political bases and can integrate them in order to find
meaningful solutions.

For Pinoys, unity or reconciliation is the greatest social
value. "Magkaisa" is their most popular slogan. By that they mean the
total absence of any form of conflict or disagreement over
principles. Pinoys would rather desist in asserting their rights
than "disturb the peace" or compromise their convictions for the sake
of harmonizing contradictory principles.

Filipinos would fight and die for their convictions rather than
compromise. Unity is not an option if the end result is the
toleration of wrong, injustice and oppression or the dilution of
values. Through conflict they are able to test the strength and
validity of their ideals and expose the moral bankruptcy of the
people's enemies.

Pinoys achieve peace through self-delusion that nothing is wrong even
if evil already stares them in the face. Their greatest condemnation
is reserved for those "disturbers of the peace" who challenge the
unjust status quo rather than for those who perpetrate injustice
through the quiet apathy of the many.

For Filipinos, peace can only be achieved through the final triumph
of righteousness, truth and justice in the struggle against evil,
lies and injustice. Peace therefore is not to evade struggle and
conflict but to traverse their course towards a rightful conclusion.

The Pinoys' doctrine of "non-violence" is nothing more than an
attempt to avoid violence and physical harm against their persons. It
is an excuse for cowardice and passivity.

Filipinos respect non-violence as an active, not passive, form of
struggle that confronts rather than avoids the violence of a
repressive State. Filipinos, though, are not as narrow-minded as to
dogmatically accept non-violence as the only valid form of struggle.

The Pinoys' primary concern during times of national crises is to
secure their families and personal careers. The country's affairs
take secondary, if not, zero importance.

Filipinos realize that family and personal affairs cannot be
insulated from the problems of the entire country. It is impossible
to create a secure and prosperous private enclave within the broader
context of national poverty.

The Pinoys also have their activists. But these Pinoy activists are
content only in organizing or attending various meetings, dialogues
and fora to discuss the national situation. They sincerely believe
that by doing so they are already participating in the movement to
revolutionize Philippine society. They use these gatherings as
a "feel good" exercise in order to conceal their apparent cowardice
and hesitation to risk their own skin in active struggle.

Filipino activists take the struggle to the streets, the organized
communities, and the hills, if necessary, as much as to discussion
groups and meetings. For them, it is through genuine sacrifice that
they can work for the transformation of Philippine society.

There are also peculiar characteristics of Pinoy activists who are
young. They are a brood who protest too much and condemn almost all
that is happening in the country. But they protest only in front of
the television, or through internet blogs and e-mail groups, cursing
to high heavens the corruption of politicians. They remain in the
relative comforts of their homes and find meaningful political
dissent in virtual reality.

Young Filipino activists likewise find the internet useful to
disseminate ideas. However, they do not remain there. They explore
ways to go beyond the comforts of their homes as they actively work
with the masses to achieve the aims of the struggle. They engage in
continuous study but at the same time are not hesitant to take up the
challenges of the times even if these would entail great sacrifices.

Older Pinoys are a self-righteous lot. They have declared as
archenemies all independent- minded young people who dare to dream and
hold firm to values and ideals. Their classic lines are: "Naku napag-
daanan na namin yan", "Papunta pa lang kayo pabalik na kami", "Marami
pa kayong bigas na kakainin". Their remaining purpose in life is to
justify the follies of their generation by discouraging the younger
generations from achieving something better and thus expose their

Elder Filipinos respect and even admire the younger generations for
their courage to embrace new ideas. They do not parade past failures
before the younger generations as perfect examples of how dreams end
in futility. Instead they guide the younger generations to learn from
their mistakes in order to help them fulfill the historical
aspirations of the people.

Pinoys celebrate the unique ways of their damaged culture by proudly
proclaiming "Iba ang Pinoy!", "Yan ang Pinoy!" as if the sheer
mediocrity of their character as a people is a source of national

being "unique". In fact, some features of Philippine culture are a
cause of shame. Filipinos strive instead to create a counter-culture
by upholding the values and principles fought for by national heroes
like Andres Bonifacio, Antonio Luna, Apolinario Mabini and Ninoy

Pinoys are the only people who enjoy calling themselves by their
pejorative reference. Neither African-Americans call
themselves "Niggers", nor Chinese-Filipinos "Tsekwa". But Pinoys love
calling themselves "Pinoys". Worse, they do not even realize the
derogatory implications of the term.

Filipinos are proud to be called by a single name --- "FILIPINOS".
