Filipino housemaids are regaining “popularity†almost a year after the government imposed new regulations on the deployment of domestic helpers abroad that included a higher salary scale.
The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) reported that employers from the Middle East, particularly Saudi Arabia, are again hiring Filipino maids.
Riyadh-based labor attaché Rustico dela Fuente said 12 Saudi manpower agencies filed their application between May and August 2007 to participate in the hiring of household workers from the Philippines.
“Saudi recruiters initially expressed dismay on the implementation of the new policy for Filipino maids but they have now given in, as shown by daily appearances of employers or their representatives at the Philippine overseas labor offices to comply with the new policy,†Dela Fuente said.
The Philippine government policy raising the minimum monthly wage of Filipino domestic helpers from $200 to $400 was implemented late last year and resulted in the decrease in the hiring of Filipino maids abroad.
But DOLE maintained that the policy not only increased the monthly pay of Filipino maids but also elicited a higher level of recognition for them.
