Couple Ronald and Ruth Ocampo did not expect that their famous lanterns and fashion accessories made from Pampanga will be sure winners in Europe.

It was only in December 2006 when they ventured into the export business. They joined Asia World Expo which was held in Brugge, Belgium. Due to the support given by the Belgians to Filipino products, Ocampo couple further joined trade expositions in United Kingdom, Spain and the Netherlands. They also showcased a variety of Filipino ingenuity and craftsmanship through their showroom in the Philippine Trade and Industry office in Brussels.

During the interview, Ruth shared with Balitang Europe that it was her dream several years ago to put up a business where they can also help small time exporters in the Philippines.

“It is my vision to penetrate the European mainstream because at the moment, our export industry is in a very difficult situation competing with China,” she said.

Ronald on the other hand admitted that though some of their products are on a consignment basis, they still shelve out P800,000 for lanterns alone. He stated that their starting capital is a whopping P1,5 million but was quick to add that they had what it takes to turn their dream into a reality.

“Knowledge is important. It is necessary that you know by heart the kind of business you’re getting into. You should also know your market,” Ronald said.

Ruth also confirmed that “commitment and perseverance” are vital factors to achieve what they want.

However, the couple believe that they are just starting and still have a long way to go but they remained positive that Europeans will continue patronizing the Philippine products. They are also confident that with the uniqueness of our lanterns and stylish designs of fashion accessories, we have a better chance of being recognized in European market which will be essential in helping small time manufacturers and exporters in our country.

The more you know the more you earn - that is if you swing into action.

In Thailand, the economy is dependent on two things: export and tourism.

I have a classmate here who is making scented candles. One order alone from a single customer in Europe is P1 million plus.

What makes me sad is that our government does not pay attention to export potentials of our country.
Our officials would always want bridges, dams, airports - and most are just ghost projects.
