Nine Filipino fishermen manning a fishing vessel allegedly held their captain hostage in waters off Mauritius Sunday night, a report reaching ABS-CBN News said Monday.

The Department of Foreign Affairs called up the Philippine embassy in Nairobi, Kenya about the incident. It, however, has yet to identify the Filipino crew.

The embassy, meanwhile, confirmed it has received a report on the alleged hostage-taking incident involving the Filipinos. According to the report, the Filipinos held the captain hostage because he was maltreating them.

The embassy has already coordinated with the East African Seafarers' Assistance Program and the Mauritian government regarding the plight of the Filipinos.

The DFA, meanwhile, said that the Filipinos' families should not worry because the fishermen and their foreign counterparts are safe.
