Pinoy doctors in US health care scam to face probe

MANILA -- The Department of Health (DOH) asked the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to furnish them reports on the medical professionals allegedly involved in the United States military health insurance scam.

A Pentagon-run health insurance program has been gypped of more than US$100 million over the past decade in the Philippines, which local doctors and hospitals conniving with American veterans to submit fraudulent claims.

A Filipino doctor was arrested in Guam in connection with the health care scam. He has pleaded not guilty to submitting US$2 million in counterfeit demands. However, there are some cohorts still in the Philippines who might be extradited to the US in the future.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said they would conduct their own investigation on local doctors who conspired with American war veterans in swindling the program of more than US$100 million.

"Our investigation will be based on the records and to unravel the identities of the professionals who are involved in this fraud," he said.

Duque pointed out that if the accusations were indeed true, the image of the country and its medical professionals would be jeopardized.

According to him, it is important that those local doctors accused of fraud should be investigated on whether they are also doing the same among local health insurance firms.

Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez Sr., for his part, expressed willingness to cooperate with the US government in turning over any Filipino who may also be involved in the scam.

Gonzalez said there has been no official action yet sought by the US from the Department of Justice (DOJ), but Manila could only turn over a suspected Filipino once the US government has met all the requirements in the extradition treaty.

"We will (give it due course). There are certain requirements under the treaty that should be met. Like right now, there is a request for extradition for an Indonesian but we denied the request for extradition because they have not complied with the requirements of the treaty," he said.

He said part of the process is to await the adjudication of the local courts, stating that there is probable cause against the person before he could be extradited.

"The only downside there would be the legal maneuvers their lawyers here will do. Like in the case before of (former Manila congressman) Mark Jimenez, we complied with the extradition but there were certain hurdles that we have to do through the courts here because they went to our courts. Those are the things already beyond the control of the government because the court will issue writs, for example, we have to comply also with the orders of the local courts until we can have them resolved," he said.

A hospital group, which Gonzalez declined to identify, has recently been blacklisted by the US for anomalies ranging from overcharging of claims for veterans to manipulation of records to false representations.

"I think this hospital group was in Subic, in Angeles City and in Bacolod," he said. (FP/ECV/Sunnex)

sus intawn, abi siguro nila they can get away with it. Daghan gyud nag under estimate sa power of the US secret service agency oi.
Why these take the risk man gyud. Pero saon man lagi, kung ma carried away, I guess they can't stop, they thought nga safe sila.
