From a blogspot post named "Anonymous"I am a Western expat living in an upmarket block in Dubai. Recently I was approached in the garden by a young filipina woman who tearfully told me:
She arrived four months ago to work for a Mid-Eastern couple with two children. They do not give her any days off and lock her inside. She is allowed out for about two hours a week to watch the children at play in the communal garden. They watch from the balcony to see that she does not speak to anybody. They never pay her, claiming they are holding her salary for payment when her contract expires after one year. They have confiscated her papers and cellphone and she is not allowed to make any calls. She is forbidden to talk to anybody (hence her discussion with me was in a toilet). They feed her scraps from the table and she is losing weight. They do not beat her or molest her.
The woman has children at home and would at least like to call them occasionally and she believes they are desperate for her to send money.
What can she do?
