Philippines to host international conference on translation in September 2017

MANILA, March 2 (PNA) -- The Philippines in September will host an international conference on translation and translation studies to discuss best practices worldwide and potential collaboration in the region.

Non-governmental organization Filipinas Institute of Translation (FIT) will collaborate with the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) in holding the “2017 Salinan International Conference: Translation and Translation Studies in Local and Global Contexts” on Sept. 28-30 at the Ateneo de Manila University.

FIT officer-in-charge and president, Michael Coroza, who is also the conference director, said the event aims to raise awareness on translation, which is hampered by a lack of a regulatory body that would set standards for translators.

“Although we are a country with diverse languages, translation and translation studies remain to be an underappreciated field in the Philippines. The country lacks a national agenda in the field of translation, let alone systematic study and criticism of the area. This lack of attention has made it difficult for schools, educators and the public sector to transfer various forms of knowledge,” NCCA chairman Virgilio Almario has said.

Coroza also pointed out that excellent translators are sure to earn from their craft, noting that government-certified translators in Canada earn as much as USD10,000.

The conference will feature experts in translation, among them Lawrence Venuti from the United States, Luise von Flotow from Canada, and Almario from the Philippines. Other speakers from Italy, India, Hongkong and the Philippines will also take part in the event.

“The global conference will pave the way for the Philippines to be known in the international scene as a key player in the development of translation practice. This is a unique opportunity for educators and translation practitioners to come together to learn from country case studies and best practices globally, and eventually to formulate a strategy for the development of the field in the country,” Coroza added.
