President Benigno Aquino III assured Monday that the Philippine National Police (PNP) will be provided its arms requirements 100 percent or even more despite the tedious process under the government procurement system, as long as these processes undergo thorough review following his instructions for “the biggest bond for the bulk.”

President Aquino was in this city Monday to lead the awarding of the Seal of Good Housekeeping for Barangay Governance and the oath taking of new Liberal Party members in Quezon province.

In a press interview, the President explained that “kung ano po yung budget natin ay maparami yung makukuha para yung dinatnan kong kakulangan ay mapunan.”

The Chief Executive said the winning bidder can deliver the supply of some 60,000 to 70,000 pistols in about a year and a half.

He also ordered to expedite the review and evaluation on the rifles so these could be delivered as soon as the winning bid is awarded.

Responding to the press query, President Aquino pushed for the arms acquisition for the police force after a Quezon newsman reported to the President on the shortage of firearms at the Quezon Provincial Police Office which has some 1,465 personnel.

Police sources said that as of the 2nd quarter of this year, even the Calabarzon Police Regional Office listed a shortage of some 1,156 short firearms and 704 long firearms.

Under the Capability Enhancement Programs (CEPs) for 2011 and 2012, the regional police office is expected to receive some 3,400 short firearms and 180 long firearms.

The PNP leadership issued the directive for the PNP procurement of the 74,600 firearms under the CEPs to address the shortage by 100 percent, thereby benefiting the Quezon Police Provincial Office.
