Phase II of Boracay drainage project up for biddingBORACAY ISLAND, Aklan, March 9 (PNA) -- The second phase of the Boracay drainage project, eyed to solve the flooding problem in this world-renowned island, is now up for bidding.
The Boracay drainage project is a public-private partnership between the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) and the Boracay Island Water Company.
TIEZA, an agency under the Department of Tourism, will fund the construction of the facility while BIWC, a subsidiary of the Manila Water Company, will be in charge of maintenance and operation.
Jennifer Vergara, BIWC operations head, said the construction for Phase II of the project will start in the first half of the year.
For Phase II, a pipeline will be constructed in Bulabog so that treated water will not be discharged to Bulabog Beach anymore but will be diverted to a wetland in Sitio Lugutan.
Vergara said that once the bidding process is done,
construction of the pipeline will immediately start.
Phase I of the project was completed in August 2014. It was designed to solve the flooding within the 11-hectare central business district on the island.
Last year, a multipartite agreement for Phase I was signed by TIEZA, BIWC, local government unit of Malay, provincial government of Aklan, DOT, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Boracay, the Boracay Foundation, Inc. (BFI) and the Boracay Windsport Association, Inc. (BWA).
The agreement aims to ensure proper implementation of the drainage project. (PNA)
