The Philippine National Police (PNP) high command said on Saturday this year's celebration of the Yuletide season was generally peaceful with lesser number of firecracker-related and stray bullet incidents throughout the country.
PNP chief Director General Raul Bacalzo attributed this significant improvement to the vigilance of the police in enforcing prohibitions against illegal firecrackers and indiscriminate firing of guns, the heightened awareness of the public through government and non-government organizations information efforts and the inter-agency coordination by health officials, local governments and law enforcers.
“I must congratulate all police units for maintaining their vigilance throughout the holiday season. I would also like to thank the various government agencies as well as the public for their continuous support and cooperation,†said Bacalzo.
According to PNP spokesman Chief Supt. Agrimero Cruz Jr., the chief PNP and National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) chief Director Nicanor Bartolome continuously monitored the situation in different police stations and hospitals in Metro Manila and other key cities.
Cruz said that during the New Year’s Eve revelry, the PNP noted fewer firecracker-related injuries this year while only 16 stray bullet incidents were being validated, down from 33 incidents last year based on Dec. 16, 2010 to Jan. 1, 2011 time frame. - pna
