PCOO chief to strengthen PIO network
« on: May 02, 2020, 03:36:04 PM »
DUMAGUETE CITY – Secretary Martin Andanar of the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) announced on Friday plans of reviving a network of public information officers (PIOs) especially in the provinces to allow for a two-way communication between the Palace and the grassroots level.

Secretary Andanar made the announcement at a press conference during his visit Friday morning to Dumaguete City, the capital of Negros Oriental.

The PCOO chief explained that part of their visit is to revive the group of PIOs nationwide through the recent launching of the Provincial Communication Officers’ Network.

In line with this, Andanar said they have already visited Surigao Del Norte, Agusan Del Norte, General Santos City, Sarangani, Pangasinan and the Cordilleras.

After Dumaguete City, the PCOO chief and his party will proceed to nearby Siquijor Island.

Andanar cited the importance of having PIOs in the municipalities and cities, and the need to bring them together under the provincial communication officers’ network.

This, he said, is to make it easier to deliver the message of the President down to “purok” level or to the communities.
This will also open the line of communications between the provinces, through the PIOs, and Malacañang.

“This way we have a more vibrant communication,” Andanar pointed out.

He also highlighted the importance of educating the municipalities that do not have PIOs because they are among the primary “source of information” that can help the national government in disseminating information to barangays and the local media.

Andanar also cited the establishment of Philippine Communicators Network (PHILCOMNET) during the incumbency of then President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in 2004 but did not pan out, but now he says “we will resuscitate, relaunch that network in the hope of being able to communicate easily” from top to bottom and vice versa.

Andanar also said they are here to meet with the local media because of the need to strengthen ties with them.

“Because the President time and again mentioned, especially during the campaign, the importance of decentralizing government. So when you decentralize government it is not limited to DPWH, PNP, AFP, etcetera, but we should also decentralize information”, Andanar said.

The PCCO secretary said this is “to make everyone feel that there is government after all through the means of communication”. (Judy Flores Partlow/PNA)
