ILOILO CITY -- The Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB) will look into the possibility of increasing the salaries of household workers in Western Visayas.
Two public consultations are slated next month in line with the “motu propio” proposed hike for wages in the cities of Iloilo and Bacolod. It will be held October 17 at the Department of Trade and Industry audio visual room in Iloilo City and on Oct 23 at the Sugar Workers Development Center in Bacolod City.
The last wage increase for domestic workers in the region was on February 16, 2016. Those working in chartered and first class municipalities were paid PHP2,500 monthly and PHP2,000 in other towns.
On Friday, regional director Johnson Cañete of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and chair of the RTWPB 6 said that there was no proposal and they have not received complaint as well with regard to wages of domestic helpers.
“By virtue of our own move of the wage board, we will have a public hearing to determine whether or not we need to increase the salary of our domestic helpers,” he said.
DOLE has conducted a survey among its member-agencies employing household workers. In the questionnaire, they were asked how much they are paying their workers.
“The results of the hearing, the results of the questionnaire, we will consolidate to serve as basis for the board to whether or not increase the wages of ‘kasambahay’,” he added.
Cañete expressed that in the “real world” no one will accept the current salary that is being provided for in the wage order intended for house helpers. (PNA)
