MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATE) For failing to stop his vehicle when he was asked to, a jeepney driver was shot dead by one of three male passengers Thursday morning in Quezon City, police said.
Virgilio Aloz, 49, of Block 20 Lot 23 Magalang Street, Maligaya Subdivision, Caloocan City was declared dead on arrival by attending doctors at the Fairview General Hospital from a single bullet wound in the back.
Police Officer 2 Rodel Tumangday of the Quezon City Police District Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit said the incident happened at around 6:30 a.m. at Doña Carmen Subdivision along Commonwealth Avenue.
Tumangday said that three men flagged down and boarded the passenger jeep but when the vehicle moved several meters near the entrance of the Doña Carmen Subdivision, the male passengers suddenly ordered him to stop.
When Aloz failed to step on the brakes, one of the three men suddenly pulled out a handgun and shot the jeepney driver in the back, hitting him just below the right shoulder blade.
The assailant and his two companions fled the scene and police were conducting follow-up operations.
The suspects then hurriedly alighted from the vehicle and fled on foot.
Bystanders immediately brought Aloz to the nearest hospital to try to save him but the victim had lost too much blood.
