Palace on JDV exposé: Too late the hero
« on: February 06, 2008, 08:16:56 AM »
A day after former House speaker Jose de Venecia poured his heart out during an emotional speech that revealed anomalies in the administration allegedly masterminded by President Arroyo's biological and official family, Malacañang asked him: why only now?

"Why up to the last minute was he moving heaven and earth to have a photo-op with the President during the golf game to show that the President is still supporting him?" Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said in a radio dzMM interview Tuesday, referring to the weekend golf game between officials of the ruling Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats.

"Why did he make those allegations only now? Why up to the last minute he was projecting support of the President for his leadership?" Bunye added.

The Philippine Star, meanwhile, reported that President Arroyo ignored the verbal attacks made against her and members of her family by de Venecia. In her speech at the energy summit at the SMX convention center in Pasay City, Mrs. Arroyo made only a brief reference to the tumultuous voting in the House of Representatives Monday night.

"We are focused like a laser pointed on the infrastructure boom and expansion of public services and not on politics," she said.

She responded to one of de Venecia’s allegations in his privilege speech that the sale of state power plants was rigged in favor of Palace cronies.

She said: "The sale of the assets generated funds much more than we asked for. And in all these transactions, even losing bidders congratulated us."

In a related development, Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corp. president Jose Ibazeta Tuesday reiterated that the bidding for the National Transmission Corp. (TransCo) was done in a "very transparent manner," contrary to de Venecia’s allegations that it was rigged in favor of the company owned by businessman Enrique Razon Jr., who is known to be close to the Arroyos.

"We have done all the auctions of Napocor assets based on existing bidding rules. We have always been transparent on all these transactions," he said.

Razon has also challenged de Venecia to prove his allegations.

In a text message to The Star, the executive assistant of Razon quoted him as saying: "Show proof that I talked to even one congressman," in response to de Venecia’s claims.

Interior and Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno, meanwhile, denied that he was behind de Venecia's ouster.

Puno said that it was the congressmen that kicked de Venecia out of the speakership and not him.

But for de Venecia ally and Manila Rep. Bienvenido Abante, Puno is behind it all.

"He's with KAMPI (Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino, the President's political party) -- I wouldn't be surprised if they consulted him," he said.

For his part, Puno challenged the Pangasinan representative on Monday night to leave the administration coalition.

Meanwhile, former Surigao del Sur representative Prospero Pichay, who was beaten by de Venecia for the speakership once, said that the former speaker is also in danger of losing his leadership of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats party.

Pichay, who also lost in the 2007 senatorial elections, also said that he is ready to replace de Venecia as Lakas party president.
