GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- The provincial government of South Cotabato has released an initial P4.75 million for the educational assistance of public elementary and high school learners or students the province.

Jerry Gamu, chief of the local government’s Barangay Affairs Unit (BAU), said Wednesday the funds were released to 170 elementary and high schools in six towns in the province.

These are the municipalities of Banga, Lake Sebu, Polomolok, Tampakan, and Sto. Nino and in Koronadal City.

“It will benefit a total of 15,290 learners in these areas,” Gamu said in an interview.

The official said the funds will cover the annual Parents and Teachers Association or PTA and other related fees of the students.

BAU mainly implements the program in coordination with the barangay councils and public elementary and high schools, he said.

Gamu said they allotted 50 slots for each of the province's 199 barangays for the elementary and high school levels.

But he said some barangays have exceeded their quota based on the need and the area’s population.

Gamu said they directly released the funds to the schools, through the principals and PTA treasurers.

Of the released funds, he said 8, 371 elementary learners received assistance of P500 and 6, 912 high school students got P800 each.

The assistance is part of the provincial government’s continuing educational grants to elementary and high school students enrolled in public schools, under the grant-in-aid component of its flagship Kabugwason-Paglaum Scholarship Program (KPSP).

In 2016, the local government released a total of P12 million for the implementation of the KPSP grant-in-aid program.

The KPSP, which is now on its 13th year, also provides scholarship assistance to “poor but deserving students” enrolled in technical-vocational courses, college undergraduate courses, and postgraduate studies in law and medicine.(FKA/PNA)
